<la_mettrie> what the actual **ck is wrong with these manuals... https://i.imgur.com/pXQikaS.png
<pierce> Perhaps try another pdf viewer?
<la_mettrie> i've tried okular, evince & firefox's viewer
<muurkha> missing system font?

<cousteau> sounds like a missing font, yeah. Fonts should be embedded in the PDF, but they sometimes aren't

<muurkha> historically embedding fonts in the PDF was optional (and often illegal)
<leah2> and superfluous, the printer had them anyway! ;)
<muurkha> just to be clear, you're not talking about the PDF la_mettrie is having trouble rendering, are you?
<muurkha> (there's a list of 14 core fonts defined in the PDF standard, which are the ones that were normally on a PostScript printer, and you can still use those without embedding them, even in PDF/A)
<enthusi> if people use weird fonts and do not embedd them in the PDF that is just bad style
<enthusi> and against the idea of the P in PDF
<muurkha> yeah, and PDF/A and I think PDF 2.0 prohibits that practice
<enthusi> but that whole area is pretty ill defined right from the start
<muurkha> nevertheless a substantial fraction of PDFs refer to non-embedded non-core fonts (I think the number we got was 22% of all PDFs or something)

<dh`> okular, evince, and whatever firefox is doing are probably all poppler; might be worth trying a different backend like ghostscript

<sorear> recent firefox is just pdf.js
<la_mettrie> here's the actual file if you want to try it, the page i showed was 86 but it looks nasty throughout https://dl.sipeed.com/LONGAN/Nano/DOC/Bumblebee%20core%20datasheet_en.pdf
<sorear> having trouble even finding page 86, the pages on nonconsecutive
<pierce> Broken on iOS too
<muurkha> firefox uses pdf.js, yeah
<muurkha> GhostScript has the same problem
<muurkha> I don't have my tools here for analyzing PDFs
<muurkha> but just looking at it in less(1) I think maybe the font /TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT isn't embedded? maybe someone else can confirm
<sorear> the pdf may just be bad
<muurkha> also maybe [ /Arial-BoldMT /ArialMT ] and some others
<muurkha> PDFs lacking embedded fonts are a limbo: they may be good or bad depending on what fonts you have installed and how your PDF viewer is configured
<sorear> the main font in that document is a serifed monospace font, probably not either
<muurkha> there are others, and my thought is that the serifed monospace font may not be the correct font, which is why it's displaying wrong
<sorear> suspecting they may be using the same monospace font for the chinese and english text
<muurkha> plausible, but doesn't help to explain the problem AFAIK
<sorear> if the font were wildly the wrong size I'd expect more clipped text
<muurkha> there's a *lot* of clipped text
<muurkha> I mean it could be some totally different problem
<muurkha> but looking at the file I don't see where those three fonts are supposed to come from (their /FontDescriptor doesn't have a /FontFile or /FontFile2) and they sound like the kind of fonts that might be universally installed on some operating system in China

<cousteau> la_mettrie: ok I can confirm
<cousteau> it looks like crap
<cousteau> I don't think you have any issue with your PDF viewer. The document probably looked like that originally.
<cousteau> It looks like it has pieces of MS Word comments/annotations in it
<muurkha> it seems unlikely that it looked like that originally
<muurkha> I mean it's not a subtle problem
<muurkha> do you have the fonts I mentioned above installed on your system?
<sorear> do we have anyone here with zh_CN windows
<cousteau> oh, probably not, let me see
<cousteau> I have Arial Rounded MT Bold
<kehvo> Perhaps notifying them could help eventually
<cousteau> I have MS Office stuff installed in PlayOnLinux, but I don't think that includes a PDF reader
<muurkha> hmm, so you probably have all of them
<cousteau> well no because it installs the fonts on PlayOnLinux, I don't think Evince et al have access to them
<cousteau> hm, do I have a browser?
<muurkha> I have no browser and I must download
<dh`> has anyone tried it in macos preview yet?

<cousteau> ...and I'm a sinner. Just tested on Windows (Chrome and Adobe Reader). Looks like crap in both.
<cousteau> Also on iPad.
<cousteau> As for "it seems unlikely that it looked like that originally", notice that the document is named "_en", so that's probably a quick and dirty English translation they probably didn't check before uploading
