<jrtc27> probably best to wait for the JH7110 variant, assuming they still intend to fix it so DMA is coherent
<Esmil> i guess that depends on how anxious you are to have some real risc-v hardware, it's cheaper than the sifive boards, but less broken than and more powerfull than the D1s

<pierce> muurkha: Blender recently has deprecated support for OpenCL, in favour of AMD/Nvidia specific solutions
<dh`> is there a way to get gas to assemble the new PAUSE by writing it as a FENCE?
<pierce> Which raises the question, if OpenCL is being dropped, what is the next vendor agnostic solution? Do vendors just need to be convinced OpenCL 3 is the bee's knees?
<dh`> (I haven't tried, I figure someone here probably knows without having to think about it)
<dh`> (or experiment)
<jrtc27> try fence 0, rw or whatever it is
<jrtc27> that or fence , rw
<jrtc27> (assuming my memory of the encoding is correct)
<dh`> I think it's w, 0
<jrtc27> hm, neither seems to work, at least with the gas on godbolt.org, but its riscv gnu toolchain is pretty old
<dh`> in the toolchain I have w,0 is rejected and w, assembles to w,w
<dh`> oh well
<jrtc27> o.o
<jrtc27> in what world is w, the same as w,
<jrtc27> uh w,w
<dh`> I think the nonideal gas law applies :-)
<jrtc27> that's a new one to me :')
<jrtc27> does that mean linux-rt=linux-pv/n
<dh`> lol

<jrtc27> no and it likely never will be
<dh`> the consensus seems to be that unix on riscv will always be 64-bit
<jrtc27> note that the upcoming RISC-V profiles and platforms specs won't include a 32-bit application-class profile and set of platforms
<jrtc27> only 64-bit
<dh`> I don't really agree with this proposition but nobody asked me
<sorear> [they're already gone]

<jimwilson> openembedded has 32-bit support, gentoo supposedly does also, I haven't tested either one
<jimwilson> current binutils mainline does have pause support, not sure if in last release or not
<jimwilson> esperanto is manycore risc-v, 1088 minion processors and 4 maxion processors on one die

<jrtc27> but I guess once there are platform specs it can just refer to those instead
<gordonDrogon> I think 32-bit still has a lot of traction, but bigger, better, etc. ...
<gordonDrogon> but there is only Linux, right? I guess FreeRTOS, etc. too.
aburgess_ has joined #riscv
<jrtc27> FreeBSD beat Linux to RISC-V support
<gordonDrogon> ah, intersting.
<sorear> on 32-bit too?
<jrtc27> FreeBSD has no interest in RV32
<gordonDrogon> I have a simple OS I'm playing with as a sort of retro project - it's written in BCPL though.
<jrtc27> it's a waste of time in our opinion
<jrtc27> but if someone really cares enough and doesn't make the codebase crap then we'd probably allow it...
<jrtc27> but, 32-bit is not particularly wanted in the FreeBSD ecosystem, even i386 is no longer Tier 1
<gordonDrogon> Minix?

<sorear> how far are we from the crossover point where rpi1s are more common than working i386 machines
aburgess_ has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<jrtc27> I would expect we long ago passed the point of arm32 being in more widespread use with *nix-like operating systems than i386
<sorear> arm32 installed cores, yes, long ago. arm32 direct human users, not sure

<dh`> netbsd has far too many fanatic retrocomputing enthusiasts to ever drop 32-bit
plantman has joined #riscv
jimwilson has joined #riscv
<jrtc27> yeah.. and I imagine a subset of those will want a NetBSD/riscv32
<jrtc27> maybe even rv32e... *shudders*
<dh`> and I think the current plan is that the riscv port will look like the mips port (both 32-bit and 64-bit mostly from the same assembly sources, via cpp skulduggery)
<dh`> but I've lost track of what's going on again and haven't had time to attend to it
<la_mettrie> there won't be 32-bit riscv embedded devices which would need 32-bit OS?
<jrtc27> I hope your mips port is better than FreeBSD's
<dh`> you'd think so and you'd think some of the bigger ones would want unix
<jrtc27> because FreeBSD's port has been a burning pile since the day it was committed
<dh`> it has had problems but it probably is, it mostly works
<jimwilson> plt stubs won't work for rv32e, not enough temp regs, so no shared libraries, and there is no a7 for syscall interface so that needs to change too
<jrtc27> a7 being the syscall number is only a linux thing
<dh`> I don't know if we're intending to do rv32e
<jrtc27> (and sbi, because it's just a carbon copy of the linux abi)
<jrtc27> I'd suggest you don't :)
<dh`> if you're using rv32e you probably want something lighter than unix
<jrtc27> yeah, but people like putting netbsd on their toasters
<dh`> it is true
