<sewn>
not because language but because it should be in the simplest language to bootstrap
<sewn>
everyone and their mother has a C compiler
<sewn>
but rust you need LLVM *and* rusts compiler as well
<sewn>
both taking much longer than gcc
<sewn>
if anything busybox or coreutils in hare/zig are better
<sewn>
zig is actually well designed and has moved away with llvm for the most part unlike rust
<kris_>
try to ignore the language part of this
<kris_>
gnus coreutils are the most usable and most expected by other programs and a rewrite that is substantially higher quality and much faster seems like nothing but a net benefit to me
<kris_>
i like busybox but its kinda meh
<kris_>
on desktops i mean
<sewn>
"try to ignore the language part"
<sewn>
I'm all for a modern coreutils
<sewn>
I'm not for a rust coreutils
<kris_>
i really dont mind rust
<sewn>
busybox is good tfym
<kris_>
generally i end up having a weird hybrid system of gnu and busybox when i use busybox
<sewn>
why..?
<kris_>
software incompatibility primarily
<kris_>
a lot of scripts out there don't work well on busybox systems
<kris_>
not to mention busybox isnt exactly performant anyway
<kris_>
like dont get me wrong i like busybox but i feel like it has its place on embedded
<sewn>
mk then toyboz
<kris_>
toybox is way more useless
<kris_>
it would be cool if there werent so many very needed things stuck in pending
<kris_>
sewn also i made an oftc account since i switched irc clients
<kris_>
same username as libera
<sewn>
what to do with this information?
<kris_>
idk you were asking about me being on oftc the other day
so_ is now known as so

kris_: Looked at chimerautils? It's based on FreeBSD/bsdutils.
<sad_plan>
kris_: just fix them scripts instead of installing bloat to make your system compatible. scripts should be posix anyway. even when written in rc, if sewn were going to be smart about it :p
<sad_plan>
and I also agree that toybox is terrible. I also dont like how landley just outright refuses to use posix sh for bootstrapping, instead forcing users into bash, even though he's not even going to use bash in the long term
<sad_plan>
chimerautils is also interesting as so mentioned
<sad_plan>
my only complaint was they have a vis implementation, which is not the editor vis. which was annoying
<sad_plan>
so i had to go out of my way to install vis manually on chimera linux
<sad_plan>
also, re uutil, dilyn used to use it for a while, but thats long ago now. I think it fell short for him really. but also like sewn said, its raises the bar for bootstrapping by guite a bit more

i dont use chimera linux anymore, atleast not atm. so I wont bother :p
<sad_plan>
im fine with nobara atm for my desktop, untill Im bothered to figure out a sufficent way to do all that I want on my desktop
<so>
sad_plan: Have you tried void? I recently installed it on my desktop, very pleased with it.
<sad_plan>
so: no I have not. ive thought about it in the past, but it never really sat with me I suppose
