<midfavila> do VMs with SDF
<midfavila> :3c
<midfavila> i compared it to all the big name VPS providers and unless you don't intend to take advantage of other system services SDF is very competitive
<midfavila> plus it's a non-profit so you don't have to deal with any of the shittiness that for-profit services usually entail
<kris_> midfavila i bet they're super overpriced though
<kris_> most "small" providers are
<kris_> kyun.host also exists but i dont trust them very much
<kris_> albeit kyun.host lets you pay in monero and they just give you an account hash, similar to mullvad, so if you handle yourself correctly you basically get an "anonymous vps"
<midfavila> you can pay SDF in cash
<midfavila> so anonymous transactions aren't a huge concern
<midfavila> i think SDF starts at like 5-10 a month
<midfavila> i will say that if you don't think you would benefit from MetaARPA then it's not necessarily worth it
<kris_> they don't tell you what kind of processing power you're getting
<midfavila> since i think that's 42$ a year after the latest referendum
<midfavila> it's not a ton
<midfavila> single core machine
<kris_> "$7/mo"
<kris_> for a gig of ram and 20gb of storage
* midfavila bigshrugs
<kris_> so basically, borderline useless
<kris_> unfortunately
<midfavila> sounds perfectly useful to me
<kris_> i host kind of a good amount of stuff on my vps
<kris_> im paying like 6 euros per month for a 4 core ampere arm vps with 8gb of ram and 80gb of ssd
<midfavila> ye fair enough then
<kris_> the main issue i have is that hetzner will comply with law enforcement even without a warrant apparently
<kris_> i'm not going to tell you who told me that, but i have it on *very* good authority that's the case
<kris_> which is kind of wild considering hetzner is where i host my irc bouncer
<kris_> i'm considering moving it in-house and proxying through hetzner instead
<kris_> given the connection to liberachat should be encrypted

<midfavila> im at the point where if i were to do something funky i would involve computers as little as possible in the process
<midfavila> you won't beat a state actor
<midfavila> lol
op_4 has joined #kisslinux
<kris_> you absolutely *can*
<kris_> you just also have to be incredibly conscious of opsec the entire time
<midfavila> tens if not hundreds of turbo autists getting paid to find the tiniest crack in everything you do?
<midfavila> the odds aren't great
<kris_> it just depends on what it is
<midfavila> like sure in theory you can beat the odds
<midfavila> but in practice?
<kris_> tons of "dark web" market places do completely fine
<kris_> multiple of them have ran their life cycle and closed down with their profits and moved on
<midfavila> i have a feeling that's because most of them aren't a serious problem
<midfavila> compared to other things the state could spend its resources on
<kris_> potentially
<kris_> if i were doing anything that high profile though it'd be over i2p
<kris_> not tor
<kris_> kind of funny that im having a similar discussion in another chat right now, a few times in the past couple weeks ive needed some form of e2ee chat with a friend
<kris_> i guess its about time i bite it and set up xmpp again
<midfavila> xmpp with omemo or irc/icb/talk with pgp/otr
<midfavila> tends to be my go to
<midfavila> but icb is kind of ehhhhh
<kris_> otr is cool but seems horribly maintained
<kris_> and like no clients support it
<kris_> and/or have plugins for it
<midfavila> the only client that matters supports it
<kris_> i swear if you say pidgin
<midfavila> :3c
<kris_> unbelievable
<kris_> lmfao
<midfavila> what can i say, i'm a libpurple stan
<midfavila> i know it's a hot mess but it's *my* hot mess
<kris_> i'm a weechat shill
<midfavila> it's the only way i can use muh discords on my uconsole
<kris_> even though it doesnt exactly work very well with my bouncer
<kris_> since i moved from znc to soju
<kris_> i just use the vesktop client for discord
<kris_> not on a uconsole though ofc
<midfavila> my uconsole is a 1ghz riscv machine with 1gb of ddr3
<midfavila> i dont think it could even open a modern browser
<kris_> probably not
<midfavila> it definitely tried to open uhhh
<kris_> my t480 is working out well for me though, finally got new batteries
<midfavila> that lua vi style browser
<kris_> got scammed on a batt kinda but still
<midfavila> it *did*... open
<midfavila> and then promptly OOM
<kris_> tldr bought an "oem genuine" one on ebay, 72wh
<midfavila> what did i tell you dawg
<kris_> shows up and it's labeled appropriately, looks real, OS reports 64wh peak
<kris_> so i guess its a 64wh batt
<kris_> the battery life is still fucking killer though so im not the most upset
<midfavila> ye fair
<kris_> the new internal one i got is actually the size its supposed to be at least
<midfavila> i think that's my biggest complaint about my reform
<kris_> by killer i mean easily like 14wh of battery with moderate load via discord, librewolf with a bunch of tabs open, music player playing flacs
<midfavila> is that the lifepo4 cells it uses have a fair amount less energy density than conventional cells
<midfavila> i'm thinking i might do some pretty heavy mods in the future though. add a couple extra cells in the process
<kris_> s/14wh/14h
<kris_> and yeah that could be neat
<kris_> the reform is definitely cool
<midfavila> once the modos display controller board comes out i want to try and replace the standard 16:9 LCD with a 4:3 e-ink panel
<midfavila> since afaik the imx8mq uses eDP and the modos board also offers edp
<midfavila> but that ofc entails getting a new chassis milled, probably 14"
<midfavila> which means figuring out how the hell i'm gonna get the mainboard to work
<midfavila> i'll probably just use USB A to A cables as a kludge
<midfavila> instead of modifying and ordering a new mainboard
<midfavila> then i'd like to add more cells, like i said, and im crazy enough to try and mount a kishsaver model f in the chassis
<midfavila> if theres enough depth
<midfavila> trackball and model f with a 1600x1200 epaper display in the reform...
