[ 970.780] XKB: Failed to compile keymap
<ukky>
yes, I see that. Are you running Xorg as root this time?
<Guest30>
yes first time installation
<ukky>
What is the output of this: df -h /
<Guest30>
moment
<Guest30>

How do you start X? Via startx, via xinit, any other way?
<Guest30>
ok i did it
<Guest30>
i was missing xkeyboard-config and xorg-setxkbmap prt-get deinst did not install them
<Guest30>
i was starting startx
<Guest30>
its the first time i am running crux
<Guest30>
lets try on openbox :)
<Guest30>
server terinated successfully xinit: connection to X server lostresent on the serverOpenbox was compiled without image loading support
<Guest30>
let me compile a dwm
<farkuhar>
Guest30: you're witnessing the effect of CRUX's focus on minimalism. If a port can be configured to run without some dependency, the maintainers usually list that dependency as "Optional", leaving it up to the users to decide what they really want on their system. As you noted, xorg-setxkbmap was not getting installed even by `prt-get depinst xorg`.
<Guest30>
haha
<Guest30>
thats not a problem ...
<Guest30>
its ok
<Guest30>
i thought something was wrong with the kernel configuration.
<farkuhar>
Prior to 2023-07-22 you would not have run into issues with a missing xkeyboard-config; it used to be part of the dependency chain for libxkbcommon.
<Guest30>
maybe should go again
<farkuhar>
It was to satisfy somebody's request for running qemu on a headless host, that's why they tweaked libxkbcommon to be more independent of Xorg.
<Guest30>
look,,, i was few years with arch and left, debian with some tweaks its much better. but again binaries and recommended packages
<Guest30>
crux as i see it looks promising
<Guest30>
but,,, a new user has the headache of building the kernel.... at least basic stuff as running first time x should be with dependancies
<Guest30>
since you dont know if its a kernel problem or a distribution problem
<farkuhar>
Guest30: I'm glad you found your way here to get some real-time help. CRUX does have a steeper learning curve, but it's well worth the effort.
<Guest30>
I am happy too, i thiink i will stick

<jaeger>
if you rebuild libxkbcommon after installing xkeyboard-config it should be able to pick that up
<Guest30>
ok, thank you jager
<jaeger>
No problem. Just an addition to what farkuhar said
<Guest30>
jaeger x starts but a get a black screen
<Guest30>
do i need to create a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ for_monitor ?
<jaeger>
I think it's rarely needed now outside of libinput config, maybe. On the black screen can you right click and get a menu or is it truly nothing?
<serpente>
have you set .xinitrc?
<Guest30>
yes
<Guest30>
something wrong with the monitor setings in xorg
<serpente>
no mouse cursor? nothing?
<Guest30>
still did not log to x to have mouse
<Guest30>
did not check
<Guest30>
moment
<Guest30>
it works
<Guest30>
hahah
<Guest30>
the mouse does not work
<Guest30>
and the keyboard
<Guest30>
slowly slowly
<jaeger>
Laptops can be a bit tougher to get working in those respects. My laptop's touchpad needed a few extra kernel configs before it worked. I tested using an external mouse in that case and the external one worked fine
<Guest30>
I agree jaeger and i will try.
<Guest30>
the point is that today i dont have the mess of yesterday
