<dim44> farkuhar:thanks, that's very intersting regarding the behavior of the git driver. Ended up using prtsweep (and removing ~15G of files).
<dim44> *sorry mistype
<SiFuh> git is good
<ukky> Setting PKGMK_SOURCE_DIR, PKGMK_PACKAGE_DIR, and PKGMK_WORK_DIR is another option to cleaning ports. Similar to setting out-of-tree build directory to compile Linux kernel.
<SiFuh> I specifically use this because I have a USB external drive that I use to swap between machines
<SiFuh> But I do recommend setting a different PKGMK_PACKAGE_DIR for each machine since each package may be compiled a little differently
<SiFuh> If you are cloning machines then don't worry
<ukky> Are you using PKGMK_PACKAGE_DIR to point to external media?
<SiFuh> Yep
<SiFuh> Diskspace ;-)
<SiFuh> My distfiles, packages, ports and work are on an external disk
<SiFuh> You can share all directories but as I said before your packages should really be unique to the machine.
<ukky> I have to switch my old 32-bit laptop to CRUX and learn how to build 32-bit packages on a 64-bit machine. It takes days to upgrade packages on that laptop (currently Gentoo-32).
<SiFuh> Should be easy
<farkuhar> No need to put work on an external disk though, if you have enough memory to build in RAM.
<SiFuh> farkuhar: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
<SiFuh> 32bit and RAM ;-)
<farkuhar> SiFuh: don't tell me the Wiki needs to updated again! https://crux.nu/Wiki/HowToSpeedUpBuildingPackages#ram
<SiFuh> I use RAM on my metabox to build
<SiFuh> 1G ain't enough for QT6
<ukky> He has 768 GiB of RAM and 4 GiB HDD?

<farkuhar> is it worthwhile to consider the wear-leveling that a SSD might suffer (even a large one), when weighing whether to invest in enough RAM for build jobs as big as QT6?
<ukky> BTW, I tested compilation in RAM (Chromium was tested) and it does not make much difference compared to HDD build.
<SiFuh> farkuhar: I am always concerned about this. THe external drive is SSD and I care not about it but it has survived many compilations. One would assume that SSD's would be same quality as RAM, but can we be sure?
<farkuhar> I always thought RAM was subject to stricter quality control than SSD, but I suppose it won't make too big a difference in lifespan unless you compile huge ports like QT6 on a daily basis.
<SiFuh> For me it is kind of reverse thinking. RAM does what it does. Been doing it for decades. So can handle constant re-writes
<SiFuh> Anyways not my field so I can only speculate
<farkuhar> Back in 1999, Weird Al Yankovic could supposedly afford a system with 100 GiB of RAM ("It's All About the Pentiums"). Here we are a quarter century later, and I'm still too cheap to upgrade beyond 64 GiB.
<SiFuh> I really liked that song
<ukky> How many threads for 64 GiB? Maybe that is enough.
<SiFuh> farkuhar: How about Microsoft Christmas?
<SiFuh> Threads are CPU related
<farkuhar> SiFuh: reminds me of the days when pedja and stenur would be trading song recommendations in this channel.
<SiFuh> Hahah
<SiFuh> I actually have those songs here
<SiFuh> Including the one you mentioned above ;-)
<SiFuh> farkuhar: I think it is second best song
<jaeger> farkuhar: wear on modern SSDs is not worth worrying about anymore at all for consumer use, in my opnion
<jaeger> opinion
<SiFuh> jaeger: I am thinking similar
<SiFuh> farkuhar: By the way the best song I ever think he did is ' Weird Al Yankovic - Everything You Know Is Wrong'
<SiFuh> Probably turned Republican and realised the left is full of shit :-P
