dim44: another option besides prtwash or prtsweep, is to sync your port repos using the git driver (only available for the official repos and a handful in the portdb). As noted in FS#1313, running 'ports -u' will trigger a 'git clean' operation and then a hard reset, thereby deleting any downloaded sources, work files, and built packages from that ports tree.
<SiFuh>
Or you can have the work files, packages and distfiles in another location right?
<farkuhar>
SiFuh: that option was already mentioned by jaeger.
<SiFuh>
:'-(
<farkuhar>
too bad I already ran 'oldfiles | xargs rm' before discovering a discrepancy between the page count reported by file#5.45, and the actual page count of a particular PDF. If I weren't too lazy to rebuild file#5.44, I would have a quick way to test whether it's a problem specific to that PDF or something that changed in /usr/share/misc/magic.mgc
<farkuhar>
it's not even a trivial discrepancy ... file#5.45 gives the output "PDF document, version 1.3, 8 page(s)", but opening it in zathura I see a total of 53 pages.

Were there any requests/queries from users in the past to port CRUX onto any CPU arch other than i386/x86_64/arm/aarch64?
<SiFuh>
Yep, me. I was porting it to Sparc before I resigned
<SiFuh>
I also had a plan to do Alpha as well
<SiFuh>
I asked but no one wanted to do it, but they were excited about the idea of it being on Sparc64's
<ukky>
Did you have actual hardware? Why did you stopped working on it?
<SiFuh>
I had actual hardware and I no longer had that hardware when I resigned
<dim44>
farkuhar:thanks, that's very intersting regarding the behavior of the git driver. Ended up using prtsweep (and removing ~15G of files).
<ukky>
Were you looking for a port, or actually porting but stopped for any reason?
<SiFuh>
Both, I wanted a port, it didn't exist so I started porting it myself. And as I said, I RESIGNED.
<SiFuh>
I left my job. The job that had the hardware I was working on.
<SiFuh>
Not easy to steal a DEC Alpha the size of two bar fridges ;-)
<ukky>
The only DEC system I had worker was PDP-11
<ukky>
s/worker/worked/
<SiFuh>
I also worked on VAX-II but I wasn't a fan
<farkuhar>
dim44: I recently did start using the git driver again, but not because of its "auto-clean feature". Rather it was to have a convenient way of testing the web interface cgit.
<SiFuh>
Doesn't cgit = Canadian Girls in Training?

SiFuh: I thought it was a portmanteau of CGI and git, with the added benefit of emphasizing the language it's written in: C.
<jaeger>
There was a sparc64 port in the past
<SiFuh>
Was it mine?
<jaeger>
If I remember right it was cptn's but it's been a long time
<SiFuh>
Guess you don't know how to use delete like me ;-)
<SiFuh>
jaeger and nazgul. Headhunter and a dark spirit. Hmmm
<jaeger>
Hrmm, can get an Ultra 5 on ebay for about 100 USD, heh
<SiFuh>
I bought two on ebay. Never arrived. I was the highest bidder at $100 AUD. I guess he didn't want to send to me at that price. I got a refund though.

Sun SPARC ENTERPRISE T5220 Server Rackmount NoHDD SE5220 4548660-1 DVD 64Gb RAM $190 USD
<SiFuh>
I remember the day I came to my office and there was smoke everywhere. It was coming from the Sparc64. I cut the power and my colleague opened all the windows. When I looked inside there was a piece of plastic that sits above the CPU. It caught on fire. But it stopped burning the moment the power was off. CPU heated it up
<SiFuh>
In the end, I just took that piece of plastic and removed it completely
<SiFuh>
I haven't anything bad to say about it either :-P

I'm waiting for kernel 6.6. Then I start to devote myself fully to it.
<SiFuh>
sajcho: What machine are you running it on?
<sajcho>
Starfive vision2
<SiFuh>
Wow, compact
<ukky>
sajcho: I will check what you have, but my current project at work is arm-based. I was just fishing for info whether generic cross-toolchain port would be a value to CRUX.
<ukky>
SiFuh: it is just an idea, and it might be just more efficient to create ARCH-specific cross-toolchain, not a generic one.
<SiFuh>
sajcho: roughly speaking the cost for this board?
<sajcho>
100 dollars
<SiFuh>

<sajcho>
A very good toy for an old pensioner.
<SiFuh>
I am just thinking about how to use it in my truck ;-) hahah

I will keep it in mind. I have other crap to wire into the truck these days. Thanks for the info though. Really cool
<SiFuh>
My truck has an aftermarket Android thing. It is pretty useless to me since the only features I use are playing music. I was thinking of replacing it with a Rasberry Pi or something

I might use this riscv thing and build a new head unit for the truck next year. Looks to be an interesting project.
