hello, i am running into out of space error when compiling. Does compiling take up a lot of disk space? My root partition is 8G/20G used and when I was compiling rust, my du showed 18G/20G used. Can that be right?
<pedja>
it's rust, so yes :)
<cruxbot>
[opt.git/3.6]: php: update to 8.0.16
<cruxbot>
[opt.git/3.6]: imagemagick: update to 7.1.0-25
<Guest35>
is that the staging of compilation that takes up that much space?? my compilation crashed so how much more space do i need to compile? is there a safe amount that should handle anything? like say 50G?
<pedja>
there is rust-bin, afaik. Romster's built package
<pedja>
haven't looked at the port, but afaik 50+Gb should™ be enough
<joacim>
I'd go with 120GB tbh. just planning for what you need is a bit of a head ache
<joacim>
so i get what i need, and then some
<pedja>
smart to have some breathing room, yeah
<Guest35>
oh, okay. Thanks.
<ppetrov^>
Guest35, really look into rust-bin. Also, check your aliases /etc/prt-get.aliases
<Guest35>
ppetrov^, thanks! that should help.
<Guest35>
is it the work directory that gets super big in the compilation or other parts of the file system as well?
<groovy2shoes>
just the work dir
<pedja>
is 'use the port as root for work/build directory' still the default?
<groovy2shoes>
yeah
<groovy2shoes>
which is also the default dir for distfiles
<Guest35>
my work directory is on a tmpfs but i assume it starts using hard drive when it runs out of assigned ram (2G assigned to tmpfs for work).
<pedja>
can't remember what's the rationale, but that was one of the weirder parts of CRUX to me when I used it :)
<pedja>
tmpfs? don't think so. it might use swap, afaik
<pedja>
you can set an upper limit for it, since "The filesystem consumes only as much physical memory and swap space as is required to store the current contents of the filesystem."

Guest35 mine is also tmpfs and it dies when I run out of space. I ended up setting mine to 32GB. But I have 64GB of ram. I remember compiling QT5 and it was insane how much it used.
<SiFuh>
Correction QT6 not QT5
<Guest35>
SiFuh, my work tmpfs is only 2G...
<SiFuh>
I think I was using 8G when QT6 killed the space

<Guest35>
what is a good way to monitor cpu and or other components temperature during compile? i am running my laptop at -j4 and it gets really hot.
<SiFuh>
Thermal camera
<SiFuh>
Software, I was using conky, xsensors or gkrellm.
<Guest35>
@sifu
<Guest35>
SiFuh, thanks!!
<ppetrov^>
SiFuh, how long did compiling QT6 take? Same as QT5 or more?
<SiFuh>
I am not sure ppetrov^ I think it was 7 hours on an i7. I would have to look at the logs
<ppetrov^>
Guest35, if you happen to have a PC where you can build, you can easily prepare your own packages repo for crux and install the ready packages on the laptop
<ppetrov^>
7h? jeez!
<SiFuh>
And it used 17 GB of disk space
<SiFuh>
Yeah it was greater than 7 hours
<ppetrov^>
well, i compile in RAM and have 64GB and an i7
<ppetrov^>
so, I guess if I need qt6 i'll be patient
<SiFuh>
Not sure, my machine is old now
<ppetrov^>
what generation i7?
<SiFuh>
Intel i7-6820HK (8) @ 3.600GHz
<ppetrov^>
well, i'm with 9700kf, so should be a bit faster
<SiFuh>
Yeah
<SiFuh>
I moved to Ryzen now but not running linux on Ryzen
<SiFuh>
But CRUX is still running on the i7 wil the flight simulator
<SiFuh>
with*
<ppetrov^>
:)
<SiFuh>
Guest35: If you want Gkrellm, (I think it is much better than conky) I have it in my unmaintained ports.
<SiFuh>
What the hell. I can't get any ripe chilli here because the maggots come. There is a saying that 'you are what you eat'. These maggots aren't even spicy.
<ppetrov^>
what maggots?
<SiFuh>
Not sure. But they can jump
<ppetrov^>
i'm sorry man, i don't follow
<SiFuh>
I do have a video of one jumping around the table
<ppetrov^>
you get chilli and some maggots come?
<SiFuh>
I grow chilli
<ppetrov^>
ah
<ppetrov^>
ok, now it makes sense
<SiFuh>
Before they can rippen the maggots eat it and they rot
<ppetrov^>
bleh
<SiFuh>
I have grown in Australia for many years
<SiFuh>
But in Malaysia it is a war. I get scales, and white flies that kill everything. Then if I will the fruit arrives and the maggots come
<SiFuh>
Then if I will the fruit/The if the fruit arrives*
<SiFuh>
Maggots are fine, because they are clean, they only eat one food source generally.
<ppetrov^>
sounds... nasty
<SiFuh>
But you don't server that
<SiFuh>
serve*
<SiFuh>
It is a constant war and it pisses me off
<SiFuh>
In Australia I grow maybe 20 species. Never a problem. In my life only 2 plants got aphids/whit fly infection and died. Here in Malaysia EVERY plant gets it
<SiFuh>
I am seriously thinking about doing bonsai style in the house which look nice but you lose the strength and I only grow because I like I like the strength. Anything less than Bhut Jolokia is baby stuff
<Guest35>
is there a way to make sound work on firefox-bin?
<SiFuh>
Oh yeah a friend of mine was talking about it
<farkuhar>
https://crux.nu/Wiki/Pipewire is still pretty relevant, despite the rapid changes in the Pipewire codebase over the past year.
<farkuhar>
The only breaking change since that wiki page was written is that you now have to install a session manager (either wireplumber or media-session).
<stenur>
I use http://ix.io/3PN6 for my tmux status line; if called with arguments it prints to the console more verbosely. I actually have no idea how portable this is in between different hardware, Linux does not generalize stuff pretty good, ... but i am silent, as it does handle it!
<stenur>
The "brivol" thing is very specific to my acpid2 stuff
<stenur>
And yes i still use apulse for firefox-bin and it works nicely
<SiFuh>
Wasn't apulse my port?
<stenur>
nay
<SiFuh>
Hmm
<SiFuh>
Thought I obliterated it anyways
<SiFuh>
Hehe, just watched Idiocracy (2006), that is so the world we live in today
<SiFuh>
Okay I am done, bye
<stenur>
ciao
<stenur>
me too
<groovy2shoes>
Terry Crews for president

P.S.: that script shows temperature and load factor
