<ellyq> you can, but installing it is not as straightforward as x86
<ellyq> whether you would buy a macbook or chromebook, you will need to go trough specialized install process
<ellyq> it also depends on how much you want to spend on such machine, ports you need etc

<siak> I think ARM architecture is cleaner than x86 but for some reason its market share in desktop PCs is much less.
<Xogium> siak: it's much less for multiple reasons, one of them being that it's less powerful over all
<Xogium> and then you get the fact that most games aren't made for arm, and bam. 99% of people lose insterest
<Xogium> also there's no generic way to boot arm
<Xogium> every vendor make their own bootloader
luispm has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<siak> Xogium: So why a more powerful ARM is not created?
<Xogium> because arm generally targets embedded devices and or phone market
<Xogium> now of course there's exception like apple with their m serives of SoCs
<Xogium> *series of
<mmind00> arnd: regarding the overlay dtc warning from some weeks ago, we now have https://lore.kernel.org/all/20240522-bugfix-relax-checks-for-overlays-v1-1-130c8b85c06b@wolfvision.net/ waiting to be applied.
<mmind00> arnd: Would you prefer that I wait with the overlay until that happens, or is it ok take in the overlay already, while that warning is still emitted?
<arnd> mmind00: it would be good to not have any new warnings at the end of the merge window. I can take the overlay if you are confident that the dtc workaround makes it in by then though
<mmind00> arnd: robher seemed to be ok with it, but we'll need to wait for the dtc maintainer to decide ... so while it seems promising, I'm definitly not confident on the timeline ... so I guess to make our lives a bit easier, I'll delay it one release more, hopefully by then things will have gotten resolved
<arnd> mmind00: if the overlay support is simple enough, you can send a late PR for just that thing, as long as I'm able to merge everything else sooner
<mmind00> arnd: ok :-)
<ukleinek> Xogium: booting is better on arm64 I heared
<Xogium> hmm, maybe. Not sure. With the way there's TF-A and with all the different ways it can be combined with bl32 and bl33
<Xogium> EFI is one step to unify things though, I suppose
<ukleinek> Xogium: at least you can start an installer and later boot in a generic way (if you manage to not touch the permanent memory for your bootloader)
<ukleinek> Xogium: then it's the same league as x86 with the BIOS
<Xogium> yeah. It's still kind of rough though

<arnd> geertu: I'm confused by the efuse driver in https://lore.kernel.org/all/cover.1719578281.git.geert+renesas@glider.be/
<arnd> why is this a soc driver rather than an nvmem driver?
<arnd> in the description, you write that the nvmem provider is registered for userspace access, but I don't see why it needs a separate interface for the in-kernel users
