dang, i've missed it
<rapha>
i once met him in 2002. he didn't smell of poop. so that much i can say with some authority.

<Queen Fiona> RMS, huh...
<Armbian-Discord>
<Queen Fiona> I've heard more than enough horror stories.

like what?

<Queen Fiona> Sexual harrassment stuff, and of course the various gross circumstances that led people to want him out in the first place.
<stipa>
he looks like a guy who wouldn't kill an ant
<Armbian-Discord>
<Queen Fiona> Things are fairly well-documented. At the very least, a lot of people in the industry don't want to work with him, and were pretty peeved that he was allowed back onto the FSF board.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Queen Fiona> I don't want to go into too much detail because it's a bit off topic (and kinda gross).
<stipa>
well, he's the guy who's living it
<stipa>
others are all bout the money

who wouldn't want him out

<Queen Fiona> In other news, Orange Pi 3 LTS in hand. Just in time to test the new official daily, too. Will see about spinning up an image soon.

<Queen Fiona> Question for H6 board owners - does the H6 have the same overheating problems the H3 does?

<[TheBug]>
Thats a very strange question since H3 doesn't have overheating issues? O_o
<[TheBug]>
unless you are somehow silly and you don't use at least a heatsink for some reason
Lucanis has joined #armbian
<[TheBug]>
the only H3 variants with 'heat issues' are the H2+ variants without voltage regulators and if you don't cool them they will get 'too hot' but still not seen em 'overheat'
<[TheBug]>
now, I know H6 gets quite hot, I don't think it would overheat either if you cooled it correctly or set the correct governor for your cooling
<lanefu>
yeah havent had any overheating problems
<lanefu>
talking to you from an h6 right now

<Queen Fiona> My H3 got quite hot even with Armbian images, and I know that the "official" H3 images can have nonsense settings, according to linux-sunxi.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Queen Fiona> Although I think that board was on its way out, to be blunt, so maybe it's not typical experience?
<clever>
i accidentally shorted a pin on my bcm2835 a few months ago, and ever since, it idles 10 degrees higher
<clever>
its still at reasonable temps, but it is measurably higher

<lanefu> So the allwinner chips do have a very high temperature tolerance if you look at their docs. (Something crazy like up to 90c) Armbian had very conservative cooling tables. Also xunlong would publish images up to like 1.6ghz which is well beyond where it should be even when paired with a supported voltage regulator for DVFS. If you don't have DVFS at all then max clock is supposed to be 1ghz Which h3.device was

but the heat generated has to go somewhere even if it can run very hot
<stipa>
i have a plastic housing and heat got to it through mounting screws, it started to stink
<stipa>
that was after it was running smthn at full load for a long time, that was when i got it and didn't know how to use it

<clever>
stipa: yeah, you need to think of the heat generation as a rate of water flowing, and if you dont drain it fast enough, the water level will rise
<clever>
and a solid hunk of copper can be thought of as adding a tank, giving you more buffer room
<clever>
but there is resistance between the cpu and hunk of copper, which limits the rate of flow
<p0g0_>
heat capacity as water has it's limits as a model, but it's a start. Heat transfer can be conduction or radiation (and more). You want a transport medium-air, some fluid, or a lot of radiative surface, usually helped with air flow.
<p0g0_>
The the faster the fluid/gas flow the smaller the insular boundary layer at the surface of the emmitter.
<Armbian-Discord>
<bret> Managed to grab one of those 10 1GB MangoPi MQ Pro boards that just went up on AliExpress, let's see how that experiment goes 😅
archetech has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<p0g0_>
hence, why the put fans on heat sinks.
<p0g0_>
*they put
<clever>
yeah, thats where the model kinda breaks down, and you need to just know that a faster airflow gives a lower resistance
<stipa>
yeah, i have a chunky 1U sound card with metal housing, the heat simply stays in the metal
<stipa>
fans play a big role in moving the heat from the metal into the air

<bret> Does anyone know of any EU retailers (or Chinese/Ali if they're set up for IOSS?) that have the Radxa Zero in stock? Would like to do a piece including them. Prices for the board and shipping are OK from what looks to be the "official" site but with no IOSS I'm going to get hit with dumbdumb taxes and admin fees

Armbian-Discord: alie does IOSS, but I've had a seller mess it up - didn't declare the item tariff number which caused manual processing an 5 EUR fee. I now tell them I won't accept shipments with extra fee due to incomplete declaration.
