<RichN> well qualcom is not very open in the US chips are used mainly in phones with android
<Armbian-Discord>
<RichN> hense android uses a linux kernel so yes the chip should run linux but we would need to see more of 1 to get it supported
<[TheBug]>
I am not suprised, have you seen how much the dev kits for any Qualcom chip cost? Then Qualcom doesn't do any mainline support as far as I can tell, so best case you have some shitty backported 4.x legacy Android kernel they hacked to make kinda work in Linux
<[TheBug]>
your better off just to load Android on it and then run one of those apps that installs Linux on top
<[TheBug]>
or root the phone etc

[TheBug]: Tragic!
<Jmabsd>
that is so far from serving the customer base's best interests
<Jmabsd>
btw, did you see any report that Apple M1 has thunderbolt support, I am not clear
<Jmabsd>
The Arm ecosystem is a proper jungle

RichN: are you there? re Snapdragon support on Linux that would be interesting. Will the 8cx work???
<Jmabsd>
on Linux

<steev>
i am (un?)fortunately an american, and a qualcomm is my daily driver in terms of linux arm64. though yes, windows is 64bit on the arm64 devices
<steev>
considering they said they have no idea, when a *very* simply check would figure it out... i dunno how much stock i'd give their garbage article
<Jmabsd>
steev: what do you mean
<Jmabsd>
steev: there are many ARM64 makers, you have plenty of choice
<steev>
and they all use binary blobs as well, which seems to be something that the article cares about
<steev>
and while i have plenty of choice, the qualcom sd850 that i have runs circles around everything that isn't apple silicon
<steev>
qualcomm sdm850
<steev>
which is what, 3 generations behind the 8cx
<Jmabsd>
lovely.
<Jmabsd>
steev: Did you try the HoneyComb/ClearFog LX2? (And in a while, Rockchip RK3588)
<Jmabsd>
anyhow indeed for many things not so much computing power is needed
<steev>
i'll definitely try the rk3588, but no, did not use honeycomb or clearfog, mostly because of not wanting to fork out 1300 for a usable system
