<Soliprem[m]>
I have a question that's been bugging me
<Soliprem[m]>
In the dynamic tiler space in wayland, there's pretty much river and hyprland.. are they different enough that they feel different nieces, or do they strictly compete? What do you reckon?
<Soliprem[m]>
personally I've been using river for almost a year, but I just got around to doing a hyprland config, too, because why not, and they don't feel too different as programs
<Soliprem[m]>
like, one has toggleable animations and blur, but what's there of substance other than that?

<leon-p>
at the very least, river has better protocol hygiene...
<leon-p>
although in general I don't think it makes sense to think of projects as "competing"
<leon-p>
these aren't products in a market, just code some people wrote in their freetime and decided to share

What are the main differences between river and bspwm from the user POV ?
<GatanLepage[m]>
It looks very similar, which really tempts me to try it :)
<GatanLepage[m]>
In river, there is no need for a keyboard daemon as keymappings are directly managed by river itself. But apart from that ?
<leon-p>
I think our tiling is different. Don't really know how bspwm tiles though
<RZ_MJ[m]>
Yes, the tiling is very different. Tiling in bspwm is similar to sway and i3. There are large differences between those and bspwm, but from a river users perspective, they are similar by having a tree of containers aka nodes.
<RZ_MJ[m]>
Tiling in river is more similar to awesomewm, dwm etc. where the layout is predefined for all windows. The windows are arranged by their position in a list, not by their position in a tree.
