do any of you know wether there are any efforts to standardise risc-v more? as in not needing a specific iso or basicly every board
<palmer>
it's going to be a while before that gets figured out
<OwlWizard>
i am saddly aware
<OwlWizard>
i just hope that well get risc-v sockets someday

OwlWizard: If the CPU is support by the upstream kernel and it provides U-Boot or EDK II with EFI enabled in an EBBR compliant manner you should be able to boot a generic ISO.

any kernel or just linux? im mostly interested on running freebsd on risc-v
<OwlWizard>
wich does have a generic iso but i cant be sure wether itll work on the specific board i wnat
<palmer>
looks like they're not adding hardware-specific workarounds, so probably it won't run on much ;)
<xypron>
OwlWizard: FreeBSD uses EFI for booting. If you kernel has the necessary drivers for the board it should work. https://wiki.freebsd.org/riscv shows the state for FreeBSD.
<xypron>
OwlWizard: There is a #freebsd-riscv channel
<OwlWizard>
oh i can go there. ill still stick around here though

Is there a good instructional guide to riscv+linux boot stuff somewhere?

I was trying to boot Chipyard / FireSim cores a while ago and hanging at boot and it was really hard for me to sort out WTF was breaking.

as long as there are customers willing to pay for hardware that ignores the standards *that already exist*, hardware that ignores those standards will be made
<sorear>
adding more standards won't fix this
<jrtc27>
step 0 is making egregious violations of the standards actually be grounds for not being able to use RISC-V branding...
