<sevan> geist: I'm running 22.10 on a single core, uniprocessor D1 SBC (Lichee RV), just need something to that's faster at building so I can stock upstream to test.
<sevan> build*
wingsorc has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<sevan> On the Lichee RV it takes a while to boot, I assumed it was just really slow but now booting under qemu, there's a huge delay between EFI handing off and the kernel starting to load. The disk image is on nvme so it's not a sd card issue...
<sevan> boot is fairly quick, opensbi does its thing, then grub menu, then it reports:
<sevan> EFI stub: Booting Linux Kernel...
<sevan> EFI stub: Using DTB from configuration table
<sevan> EFI stub: Loaded initrd from LINUX_EFI_INITRD_MEDIA_GUID device path
<sevan> EFI stub: Exiting boot services...
<sevan> and it sits there :)

<geist> for how long? does it pick it up eventually? I've seen a good 20 secods or so there
<sevan> a couple of minutes, I'll try again in a mo, I booted without any networking configured on the qemu side
<sevan> once the kernel starts it's quick at probing things and then going multi-user. It's slowly working through the services atm
<geist> depends on the host machine too, of course. on my ryzen 3950x i've observed that qemu 7.2 runs the Rv ubuntu at approximately say 600mhz or so. actually pretty similar to a sifive unleashed
<geist> whichi s about right, based on completely bespoke benchmarks that's about a 8x slowdown from the host machine, which tracks based on past observations at how fast qemu is at running things
<sevan> host is arm64, no shiny ryzen :)
<geist> yah that might be where you're seeing an additional slow down, especially if it's a a53 or so
<sevan> yep, i.MX8MQ
<geist> yah that tracks, so a few minutes may be in line, since it may be say 4 or 5x slow host machine wise than my experience, and i think i see a good 20-30 second gap there too (assuming the gap is something computational)
<sevan> what's happening during that gap? it's just reading the kernel into memory, right?

<sevan> geist: I guess I need to envoke qemu with the monitor mode enabled then :)
<geist> yah i usually run it -nographic and then you can break into the monitor with ctrl-a c
<sevan> ah, ok. I already did that from copying the wiki article snippet

<drewfustini> fyi for those also in Brussels for FOSDEM - I'm looking to get some risc-v folks together tonight. I'm already in contact with several people but if anyone wants to ping me I am +1-773-710-7131 on signal/whatsapp/telegram.
<rneese> no your not allowed to
<rneese> its not fair to those of us who cannot be there
<rneese> lol
<rneese> morning drew

<drewfustini> Hmm, that should be the EU.
<palmer> ya, that's what I thought
<drewfustini> It's not always great reception, but I do appreciate traveling with Google Fi.

<rneese> well i found out why the vf2 imf is so big firefox is ove 5 gig and nwjs they install is lik 5,8
<rneese> no wonder it requires a 32 gig sd card
crossdev has joined #riscv
<valerius> gotta have all those crates
<jrtc27> that doesn't sound right
<jrtc27> Firefox.app on macOS is 370M
<jrtc27> and that's an Intel+Arm Universal binary
<q66> q66@builder01:~/cports$ apk adbdump packages/contrib/riscv64/firefox-esr-102.5.0-r0.apk |grep installed-size
<q66> installed-size: 191 MiB
<davidlt> Well, 5+GB would mean it's a debug build or something similar.
<jrtc27> yeah
<q66> installed-size: 946 MiB
<q66> q66@builder01:~/cports$ apk adbdump packages/contrib/debug/riscv64/firefox-esr-dbg-102.5.0-r0.apk |grep installed-size
<jrtc27> right, but that's debug info for optimised code
<q66> (but i build firefox with -g1, -g2 would be bigger, but probably not 5GB big)
<jrtc27> -O0 is going to be rather larger
<rneese> wow
<q66> debug size for release and debug should not be that much different, but debug level makes a difference
<rneese> its 105.0
<rneese> we will see once it finishes installing
<q66> but -g2 for any browser will explode
<q66> in size
<q66> -g1 is still pretty useful though
<rneese> we are running a test build withthe pkgs that they put on their img to see how big it makes ours
<davidlt> rneese, which image is it? Debian? Buildroot?
<rneese> nodejs and nwjs really for devs
<rneese> ours is a debian
<rneese> and the img they provive is their own
<davidlt> So it's a problem on their Debian VF2 image?
<rneese> yeah thier img is over 16g
<rneese> thats huge
<rneese> for just a base os
<davidlt> I pinged them to look at it
<rneese> they install v8 nodejs nwjs firefox and thier own compiled qt5
<rneese> and a version of libreoffice
<davidlt> I haven't use their Debian image. It's just a several months before until we can boot upstream.
<rneese> I think they di not care as its a demo release and not really a release os
<rneese> ahh ok
<jrtc27> why would you ever use a vendor's debian userland
<jrtc27> only thing you should need is their set of kernel packages
<davidlt> Sure. It just needs to work (in most cases) for some period of time (i.e. until upstream is done).
<davidlt> A couple of drivers landed in 6.3, but will need to wait for 6.4 to boot upstream.
<rneese> well we have fixed our bugs as of right now our average build is 7 gig but we dont have firefox/thunderbird/libreoffice yet
<rneese> so for a full build I say its close to 8 gig
davidlt_ has joined #riscv
<rneese> wow the Libreoffice pkg works well on the vf1

<rneese> on the vf1 wow

<rneese> or by end of weekend

<rneese> i have just started on the vf2 fist build
<q66> [22:22] <jrtc27> only thing you should need is their set of kernel packages
<q66> you might need userland gpu drivers too
<q66> iirc the vf5 has some cursed powervr or something
<rneese> yeah where to get those
<rneese> the video drives will be the issue
<q66> inside vendor userland distribution
<rneese> but if we get the base built we can go from there
<rneese> so the 69 img
<rneese> ameridroid says that their shipment is held up in customs
<rneese> and it could be 2 to 3 more weeks before they ship out
<rneese> someone dropped the ball
<rneese> I can work on a img and get it out there for you all to test
<rneese> but man this sucks
<rneese> they need to make a pkg for devs with drivers
<mps> for these proprietary companies we (hackers/devs) are thieves, they see us as such
<rneese> but they bought the right to use the chip should it not include driver source
<rneese> geesh
<mps> board vendors usually (mostly) have some NDA with them
<rneese> gawd what a pain in the arse
<mps> I have few chromebooks and they have gpus but I can't use them (gpus, rest works fine). price for freedom
<rneese> running first vf2 build now
<rneese> we will see how far it gets in this base mode
