<PaulePanter>
Hi. We are looking for a Single-Board-Computer for our signage display, basically running a browser served by https://www.concerto-signage.org/ on another system. Small movies are integrated in the Web pages, and the display is 4K.
<PaulePanter>
Are there RISC-V SBCs available, which can run a Web browser to display Web pages with videos fluently, and do not use that much energy?
<PaulePanter>
… and have good upstream GNU/Linux support?
<dramforever__>
AFAIK the VisionFive can't run mainline Linux yet, if that's what you mean by upstream
<dramforever__>
Well it *boots*...
<PaulePanter>
dramforever__: Good to know. Thank you. I guess, building from another tree would be acceptable, if the hardware itself meets the criteria.
<dramforever__>
I have to say I haven't checked myself, but I don't think it can handle 4k video output
<dramforever__>
Web browser support on RISC-V is ongoing, and video could be a problem as well
<pabs3>
I thought the VisionFive situation is worse than that, its that they *won't* be doing any upstreaming of the first board, only the second one, which is not out yet
<dramforever__>
I... I don't really understand what's going on, but they're distributing code on GitHub and firmware on the forum...?
<Esmil>
pabs3: it's also unclear if it's wanted upstream. Palmer seems to think it wont work and Heiko thinks it'll be messy to support, and since there won't be produced any more j7100 test chips and the jh7110 is fully coherent i don't really feel like arguing much for its inclusion
<Esmil>
not that i'm StarFive anyway

Esmil: How big is the non-coherent DMA problem? Is it more like 'adding arch_dma_* fixes it but it's a hack' or more like 'it breaks 100 different places in the kernel'?
<geertu>
Esmil: if only the last patch is a problem, it looks like jh7100 can easily be handled at runtime?
<Esmil>
i think so, yes
<Esmil>
I've been running the same kernel build on from the visionfive tree on the Unmatched, Visionfive and BeagleV boards for a week new
<Esmil>

Esmil is there an ETA on the jh7100++
<conordooley>
I am kinda surprised they've not started trying to upstream some of the peripherals for the jh7100 - I assume they're going to be very similar on the ++ one.
<conordooley>
Surely not everything is non-coherent...
<Esmil>
conordooley: well, on the jh7100 everything but clock, reset and pinctrl and maybe the video output is stuff they bought and mostly has drivers upstream already
<Esmil>
except accelerators like the nvdla and dsp
<Esmil>
where the driver story complicated
<conordooley>
And it's just a case of adding bindings for them then Esmil?
<Esmil>
mostly yes

there are same quirk with the dma fx. but the jh7110 will probably have different quirks

Has the D1 missed 5.20?
<conordooley>
I thought that smaeul was going to make a dts PR - saw him say it in emails but then never saw one.
<conordooley>
ye I was just looking through and saw stuff like the pwm (which seems to be for sifive stuff too, dunno why that'd be kept downstream)

yeah, I realized sending the DTs without a couple of devices like the regulators would be a real pain, so I am trying to quickly get those bindings in to shape
<smaeul>
so I have all the DTs written at this point, but not filtered down to the subset that I have sent/will send bindings for soon
