<clever> geist: ive started using makefile vars more, doing `PLLC_FREQ_MHZ := 500` within platform/bcm28xx/rules.mk, but i want to be able to override it from project/vc4-stage2.mk, but i think i'm running into issues from the order of imports
<geist> project should come before platform, indeed
<geist> the usual strategy is to changeit to ?= in platform, in which case it sets that value as a ‘default’
<geist> and thusifit’s already set from somewhere else it’ll stick to that
<clever> yeah, ?= on its own, does assign....
<clever> weird, now it does work
<clever> i thought i did the exact same thing a week ago, and it didnt

<clever> i now have make variables, to configure PLLA and PLLC, along with the dividers on each
<clever> and the project files can override those, to customize it for a certain situation

<geist> if you really want to or need to you could define a project/ include namespace and put a header in the project dir

<mjg> turing fucking award innit

<mjg> no joke
<heat> dragonfly dragonscalable
<mjg> no,really
<mjg> dude spent some time on it back in the day
<mjg> clearly nobody really benches it on linux

<heat> btw mjg nerdsniping me like that on my vacation is really rude
<heat> just as rude as geist nerdsniping me in my dreams
<geist> awww
<heat> im not telling you anything about PCI OpRoms
<heat> figure it out yerself
<geist> yeah i always wondered what the actual format was
<geist> i assume there’s some legacy header andthen some fancier UEFI header oir something
<geist> pretty good ken sheriff blog on early x86 again: http://www.righto.com/2023/08/datapoint-to-8086.html
<bslsk05> www.righto.com: Tracing the roots of the 8086 instruction set to the Datapoint 2200 minicomputer
<geist> hadn’t seen anyone actually trace it back before the 8008
<nikolar> Yeah pretty cool stuff
<heat> geist, it's basically a list of headers with details about the image
<heat> i think there's some possible PC-backwards-compatibleness in there
<geist> yeah probably some way to skip thelegacy header, which i suspect is something like MAGIC WORD, done
<geist> what i never fully grokked was if there was a pci option tag for selecting more than one rom image, or whatnot
<heat> wdym selecting more than one?
flom84 has joined #osdev
<heat> anyway ILL BE BACK LATER and we can discuss PCI option roms
