<zid>
recently because of bastard tab hoarders, they even stop javascript working in non-frontal tabs
<zid>
so my idle games have to be in their own windows
<zid>
AND not minimized
<zid>
sm
<zid>
I'm actually really heavy on tabs rn because I refuse to close this random youtube video that I could totally just reopen immediately at the exact spot it's paused at

three times

< heat> do browsers even do manual "swapping" of tabs to disk or are you relying on kernel swapping and not getting OOM'd in the meanwhile? ← they don't do swapping per se, it's more like what you get on your phones where background tasks are killed
<nortti>
more recently you're able to manually invoke that too, which is useful when you have 6 gigs of ram and no swap
<zid>
chrome asks you if you start it with less than 128GB of ram if you want to enable aggressive 'tab saving'

yah i think that basically just tweaks the algorithm to ditch tabs more aggressively
<moon-child>
firefox and chrome both constantly eat cpu while idling
<moon-child>
I don't care about the ram, but I wish they'd just keep the js in those unfocused tabs from running
<zid>
they do unless web workers
<moon-child>
well maybe they should the web workers too
<zid>
or more likely it's just keep-alive http reqs
<zid>
that need to push the realtime clock on the page updating by sending you 8kB of json every 100ms
<moon-child>
i don't really care what they're doing; there's nothing that i want them to be doing on my cpu while not focused, and it irks me that my 'user agent' doesn't give me a straightforward way to make that happen
<sakasama>
Disable all javascript. Success.
<zid>
I used to spend a lot of time massaging noscript into convincing websites to run with their min set of external scripts loaded
<zid>
but I eventually gave up
<zid>
too much was too broken and too unfixable
<sakasama>
I've found there's only a few sites I want scripts on, and the rest either work fine without it or can be fixed well enough by simply closing the tab.

I have more cpus than tabs
<zid>
so I don't give a fuck what they do tbh
<zid>
I just don't like running 40MB of unknown js a few hundred times a day

thank you Griwes, very cool!

did that address ever respond?
<heat>
no
<heat>
my best guess is that it's an internal "patches to OSS" address or something
<JTL>
If I were to guess it's an alias that internally forwards to *many* people, and if employees had a reason to respond they'd use emails under *their* names
