human hearing ends far earlier
<fairway>
okay fair enough, what if they change their statement to 90 fps
<another|>
at ~20 kHz
<another|>
90Hz for eyes is probably still BS
<BtbN>
I mean, ears not hearing more then a certain kHz can easily be measured
<BtbN>
Eyes not seing more than X FPS... not so easily

but definitely more than 30
<BtbN>
It's pretty much proven that at least for serious gaming, there is a legit benefit from 240Hz vs. 120Hz
<BtbN>
it mostly stems from the lower latency though. So how much the extra frames help otherwise is up for debate

btbn is there a number fps/hz where we say, this is enough
<BtbN>
For most people, 60Hz I guess :D
<fairway>
okay let me ask different way
<fairway>
in year 3000, do you think there will be 1000hz monitor
wziko has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
<BtbN>
It wouldn't surprise me. I'm sure there's special cases that profit from it
<BtbN>
Though we are definitely already in the territory where it's more than definitely "good enough"
<BtbN>
at 1kHz, the GPU and system only has 1ms to create the whole frame
<fairway>
btbn i don't mean just for professionals, i mean for everybody home use
<fairway>
btbn i don't mean just for professionals, i mean for everyday home use
iconoclast_hero has joined #ffmpeg
<BtbN>
Apparently there already is a 1000Hz gaming screen
<BtbN>
so you don't even have to wait that long
<BtbN>
Though not even counter strike can run that fast
<fairway>
that's why i said "everday home use"
<fairway>
i am sure 1000hz exist but for professionals only
<BtbN>
The problem really isn't the screens
<BtbN>
But actually feeding them at 1000Hz
<fairway>
btbn so you mean videocard ?
<BtbN>
Anything really
<BtbN>
You'll also run into a ton of CPU limits long before you can reliably produce frames in less than 1ms

I need to set the "hls_segment_options" AVDictionary entry in the options I pass to avformat_write_header(); However, "hls_segment_options" is, itself, an AVDictionary (i.e. it has type AV_OPT_TYPE_DICT) and I can't find an av_dict_xxx() mechanism that allows me to set a dictionary within a dictionary.. Can anyone point me at how to
<RobMeades>
do this?
<RobMeades>
I've tried just passing it in blindly with av_dict_set(), casting the pointer, which just gives me an error, same if I cast the pointer to an int and try av_dict_set_int(); didn't expect either of these to work but thought I'd mention that I'd tried for completeness.
<RobMeades>
Hmmm, grepping the code there's a hint in libx264.c that it might be just a string of some form:
<RobMeades>
" { "x264-params", "Override the x264 configuration using a :-separated list of key=value parameters", OFFSET(x264_params), AV_OPT_TYPE_DICT, { 0 }, 0, 0, VE },"

libavcodec, libavformat, etc. or libav the project?

i found a huge bug with ffmpeg
<fairway>
when i do ffprobe.exe video.wmv with v4.2.1 it showed 29.97 fps but with latest version it's showingg 59.94
<BtbN>
Doesn't seem like a "huge bug" to me. Probably just a change in interpretation of interlacing or something.

why would version 4.2.1 show as 29.97 then
Everything has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
<Corroddity>
4.2 relased back in 2019, thats *way* out of date. Most recient version is 7.1. This is probably a bug in 4 that was fixed sometime between 4 and 7 or a interlacing thing as BtbN mentioned.
cmc has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

<fairway>
corroddity well what if ffprobe 7.1 is only app that show as 59.94 fps and every other app shows as 29.97
<fairway>
then are you saying every other app is wrong including 4.2.1

so I'm trying to use the libav* family of libraries to write the 'covr' tag to m4a's but i don't know where I'm going wrong. The 'attached_pic' member in AVStream is filled out automatically right if you set the disposition flags AV_DISPOSITION_ATTACHED_PIC?

<fairway>
interesting, no response, since this is clearly a bug

<welder>
I debugged that -f pulse issue, and it does NOT occur in 6.0 nor 7.1 when built from sources, but it is present in all versions packaged in Debian. So that must be an issue there...
