<jaeger> sorry, had to leave for quite a while earlier
<jaeger> I generally just use generic linux
<mnkydeth> Its all good. I really didn't think any of that would effect it. Choosing your OS options.
<jaeger> Yeah, that's interesting
<mnkydeth> Yeah, the three bottom choices are Generic 2020, Generic 2018 and just Generic .... The 2020 one does not work. lol
<mnkydeth> Slackware (Current) does however. It's a good note I suppose.
<jaeger> Guessing it's something different in debian/ubuntu osinfo database files
<jaeger> I run mine on crux
<mnkydeth> Only thing I could find was the chipset was different. Between Generic 2020 and Slackware. Generic was a q35 or something. Slackware was a 440ix ...
<jaeger> Both of those support uefi, though some implementations of 440fx can't find custom uefi entries properly
<jaeger> In those cases using the default path works
<mnkydeth> I tried getting Crux on my server. I just couldn't figure out how to get the binary blob drivers working for my hardware. I'm sure there is a way. But when I took it down this morning for a fresh OS. I just kept banging my head into a wall. So I started trying a bunch of distro's for my hardware.
<jaeger> understandable
<mnkydeth> And since it's not a business setup. I had some time to play. But not as long as it took. It's a big reason I wanted to get Crux into a VM for myself. I blow up my desktop from time to time as well.
<jaeger> I'm sure there's a way but there's not always the desire to mess with it
<jaeger> https://i.imgur.com/BZQoq23.png <-- just fired up this VM booting the crux 3.7 updated ISO via UEFI to make sure I'm not crazy
<mnkydeth> Using the Generic OS option? Wich Generic OS option did you use?
<jaeger> virt-install --name crux37 --os-type linux --os-variant generic --memory 4096 --vcpus sockets=1,cores=2,threads=2 --cpu host --controller scsi,model=virtio-scsi --disk /var/lib/libvirt/images/crux37.qcow2,bus=scsi --network bridge=br0,model=virtio --graphics none --console pty,target_type=serial --boot menu=on,useserial=on,uefi --print-xml > crux37.xml
<jaeger> I forgot to add the cdrom in that virt-install command so I added it later but you can see the general idea
<mnkydeth> Ok, so the bottom one. Just Generic no years posted with it. I'll try that next as well just to see.
<jaeger> http://ix.io/4e8M <-- here's the XML for reference
<mnkydeth> Whats prefered for backing up config files? For anything, any program? gitlab or hub? Personal server?
<jaeger> Entirely personal preference
<jaeger> I keep backups on my NAS and some of it gets backed up to a cloud service (crashplan)
<mnkydeth> I was literally thinking get the base on my normal desktop. And make an image so I can just copy it back if I ever want to re-install.
<mnkydeth> Maybe try my hand at a pxe boot. Whenever I have a machine that hits the tftp server via pxe boot it just pulls a pre-built image.
<jaeger> I also use pxe boot sometimes, not too hard to set up
<mnkydeth> Maybe overkill for a home. But might be fun to learn
<jaeger> I mostly use pxe to spin up centos/oracle systems to test work stuff
<mnkydeth> I remember doing pxe back in the early 2000's with winxp at a school. I havnt worked in IT though for almost 15yrs now. And I've let a lot of my knowledge slide.
<jaeger> I know the feeling. I do a lot of this stuff for both crux and work regularly so at least some of it stays fresh. :)
<mnkydeth> I am actually getting back into it a lot more in the last 2-3 months as the wife and I bought a hair salon. The one she's worked at for the past 18yrs. And the computer systems were so bad.
<mnkydeth> They were plugging and unplugging routers, had two seperate ISP modems they were paying for. No backups of anything.
<jaeger> Lots of small business systems are terrible
<mnkydeth> So I've been revamping everything.
<mnkydeth> Put in UPS's, new computers, down to one ISP and a proper router. lol Currently working on the backup plan. Have a little $5 VPS at linode to get the website modern and updated. On the to do list.
<jaeger> Sounds like a good start.
<mnkydeth> Yeah, it's actually been fun. To bad it's all for free for my wife technically.
<mnkydeth> Just tried that other Generic option. It also loads the i440fx chipset driver.
<mnkydeth> And it worked....
<jaeger> funky

<ocb> jaeger: sorry about that, the url will be same. installing a 3.7 currently, just came to a screen to choose my favorite bootloader - the lilo. but sadly it is removed from 3.7. luckily will just copy the binary.
<ocb> once done installing will regenerate REPO file

<jaeger> I already reenabled it on the portdbs, let me know if you see any issues after updating the REPO and waiting for the next run
