for console you specify a resolution to the boot command line, like vga=0x305 for example... depends on which framebuffer driver is in use by the kernel

for X, make sure you're using the right xorg-xf86-video-<whatever> driver, and it helps to have xrandr installed

jamesguess: if you run 'prt-get depinst' for those two ports, it will build only the hard dependencies (not the ports listed as Optional or Nice to have). You probably also want xf86-video-<whatever> drivers for your hardware, too.

In general the port maintainers do a good job listing a minimal set of hard dependencies. You won't get a bloated installation by running 'prt-get depinst $TARGET', where $TARGET is the software you ultimately want to use.

If you eventually set up a system that works as your daily driver, and then run 'prt-get listorphans', it might appear that there are a lot of packages you could remove, but this impression is misleading.
