<oreo69> whats the best linux for the rock4c+, having alot of issues with performance or features like video decode/ opengl flat out not working, the most functional image ive used is the official rockchip android 11 build along with 2nd - Armbian_23.05.0-trunk_Rockpi-4cplus_bullseye_current_5.15.101_kde-plasma_desktop

<Werner> Kind a weird to use KDE and complain about performance in the same sentence :D. I suggest to try something more lightweight as DE like XFCE
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> i have been trying to get those to work using the armbian minimal image and installing the desktop enviroment ontop of that but still have the same issues, is there a ready made build of armbian for the 4cplus with say xfce of a low resource usage DE or would i need to build it myself
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> i mean its supposed to have 6 cpu cores
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> surely that can run kde and a 720p video decode, even in software
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> or should i start with the kde armbian and install a different desktop enviroment ontop and remove kde once ive done that
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> sorry if its a dumb question but its been really hard to even find the right images to boot this, tempted to return it and just get a raspberry pi somehow, was something like 148 AUD
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> if anyone can point me towards some support forums or something like that id appreciate it alot
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> In terms of DE processing power is not really the bottleneck if proper hw acceleration is in place but rather memory which is limited to 4GB on RK3399.
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Use it to remove `/root/.not_logged_in_yet`
<e3ef13f4ff44>
okay thanks!
<e3ef13f4ff44>
so i have to set up the timezones etc manually then?
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> Thanks man appreciate it, i dont expect arm to be without its problems and usually use a desktop environment just while setting devices up and testing to see what hardware is capable of, fed it a 4k mp4 file from my dji mini 2 and plays it back flawlessly currently under kde, suprised by that but theyre also mp4 which ive read theres dedicated hardware to support that, then after <clipped message>
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> that ill usually deploy it knowing its running fast n reliably, just need this lil board to run maybe cpl ipcams and a personal cloud, and pihole aswell if the cloud server n ipcams isnt too much. Got it running stable right now thanks

<oreo69> I had a new debian bookworm for the board, found it on github, but couldnt get much working on that image on the rock4cplus
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> Although i am learnin more as i go so thats always a positive
<DC-IRC>
<oreo69> Downloading build tools at the moment so i can start makin my own distro

<Tenkawa> @LightIsBright which board you working with?
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> I assume Odroid's offhand since you mentioned Petitboot
<DC-IRC>
<LightIsBright> Odroid m1

<DC-IRC>
<rpardini> Well we've full kernel support for the MTD device, so `/dev/mtdblockX` is available, which triggers the option being available in `armbian-install`.
<DC-IRC>
<rpardini> For ODROID-M1, we're not building nor shipping u-boot yet, so we're counting on the factory-SPI uboot working.
<DC-IRC>
<rpardini> BTW would be nice if people with experience building ATF for the 3568 and the m1 uboot could implement those so we can de-infest the M1 from Petitboot as well.
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> @rpardini I'll dig mine out later when I get home and see how its built and see what I can determine
<DC-IRC>
<rpardini> Yeah that'd be nice. I'm stuck back in time when we had no `PLAT` for 3568. Dunno if it's upstreamed, or some hero did it on its own...
<DC-IRC>
<gambl0r> deinfest, lol
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> heheh
<DC-IRC>
<rpardini> yeah ODROID stuff is nice, but comes infested with that stuff. We've de-infestation procedures & blobs ready for HC4, N2+, etc, but not the M1 yet.
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> To this day I've yet to see Petitboot nor Oowow on the Khadas side.. been able to replace them both
<DC-IRC>
<rpardini> oowow (and m1's petitboot) is not as horrible as the petitboot on meson64... since those actually defer to bootscripts/extlinux or even post-SPL uboot on SD card.

I read Armbian 23.05 has been released some days ago now. I use Armbian on an Odroid N2+, actually with Bulseye. But until now I still have not any package update to 23.05. Is there something I did not understand? I use my own miror which is up to date, I also tested with apt.armbian.com to be sure but with the same result, no update at all
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> you probably didn't get the link did you?
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> it was in the announcements channel...
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> Just a quick heads-up.
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> While we successfully released tons of fresh images our apt repositories are not up-to-date. Therefore you will not get the new version with apt upgrade yet.
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> There are undergoing preparations to push packages to beta first. Stable packages are provided from there as soon as possible.
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> the mirrors will not be up updated
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> yet
<Nardol>
I had a discord link but did not find the info, so thanki you very much for your pricisions :)
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> Yeah the discord-irc bridge doesn't handle copy/pasting the links greatly
<DC-IRC>
<Tenkawa> (I tried to just grab a msg link... doesn't work so well in the bridge)
<Nardol>
No problem, all is clear for me now and I know I did not break anything ;) thanks a lot for your very fast help!
<Nardol>
I'll be patient until apt repository is updated, then I will also be able to think about upgrading to bookworm :)
