<DC-IRC> <SuperDev> Hey, have you guys heard of the Linux running on phones? I’ve been toying with the idea of installing Linux on my phone with the purpose of running desktop applications on it. I’m curious if it would be possible to run desktop applications on a phone if you install Linux on it like Ubuntu touch.
<DC-IRC> <SuperDev> Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

<aandrew> good morning. Can anyone assist with enabling USB host mode on a banana pi m2 zero? it *should* be a matter of decompiling the dtb, switching dr_mode from otg to host and recompiling, but when that didn't work I also tried including the 'usbhost0' (and later usbhost1,2,3) overlays, and while the latter makes more usb roots show up, nothign I plug in shows up yet.
<aandrew> This is with Armbian 21.08.2 Bullseye and Linux 5.10.60-sunxi, and the device I'm trying to see on USB is a cell modem hat which if I plug it into a PC just pops up as four USB serial ports, as expected.
<DC-IRC> <speakertomeat> Trouble is you can't simply install linux on an android phone and just use it, at least as a phone. Lots of hardware management components in android phone work in higher layers than the kernel and are provided as binaries in android components by vendors, so you lose a lot of functionality, even basic one without driver support. There's work to make phones supported but you need <clipped message>
<DC-IRC> <speakertomeat> to find out if yours has had any work done to support.
<DC-IRC> <speakertomeat> As for what it's using one like, sorry, I can't say, my last linux handheld foray whas on the time where Compaq paid a team to work on a linux for their PDAs
<DC-IRC> <speakertomeat> Hey, are generic linux questions welcome here? Or should I take them to #linux on irc?
<aandrew> hm wait that might be my issue; I was only wiring over D+/D- but the cell modem may be expecting 5VUSB as well just to detect presence of a USB host, I should try that too (it's actually powered through the 40 pin connector)

<archetech> new libre cottonwood sbc announced 2x the rpi4
<archetech> meh have an N2+ that can for 3 yrs
<DC-IRC> <tenkawa42> The company was very coy about specs, covering the SoC with a heatsink in the sample photo and responding to user questions on Twitter by just saying that it is some kind of ARMv6 processor.
<DC-IRC> <tenkawa42> if it is a armv6 then I call... "yeah right"...
<DC-IRC> <tenkawa42> I would hope thats a typo
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> A joke, they aren't revealing the SoC yet
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> Has the bookworm update been added for apt update && apt upgrade yet?
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> Also what armv6?
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> isnt that old
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> yes, it's a joke about the out of date provessor the first Pi launched with
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> yeah even then without them they wouldnt have existed so they should just shut their trap
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> BCM2835 is armv6

<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> meh, I was using arm single board computers 3 years before RPi graced us with their underengineered junk
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> I was a big fan, the cost was unbeatable though
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> Yeah but I am guessing yours wasnt commerically available for a decent price ?
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> I lost interest when the 3 was such a mess
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> not as cheap, no
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> way better documentation though
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> Pi 3/4 dont make sense to me
<DC-IRC> <.richn> ?
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> never even bought a 4, I bought 3 pi 3's (or 4?) and they were *terrible*
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> so I wound up getting a Tinker Board
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> and an XU4
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> Pi 4 is slow for some reason even though it boasts about its Cortex A72
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> never looked back
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> Or well it feels sluggish
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> clockspeed and the fact I don't think you actually know for sure what the system is doing throttle wise
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> thanks to the videocore owning *everything*
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> I know that the videocore is considered the "main" processor dont know to what extent though
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> but that might be different for the 4? can't really say
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> Atleast in terms of booting up
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> on the older ones, the ARM cores are basically peripherals
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> yes
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> Still is with the Pi 4, videocore 6 is just a rebranded version of 4 slapped with some tweaks.
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> so they have to ask permission to use any system resources as far as I'm aware, and the power/clock system was definitely inside the black box of the closed source firmware
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> sounds horrible for efficiency
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> for a TV box with an overlay and some basic networking, perfect
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> which is what those SoC's are for
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> And also the fact that crypto isnt accelerated bothers me
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> And the wonky H265 decoding unit thats essentially like you said about the ARM cores "bolted on"
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> licensing
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> for example if I made anything with crypto accel and tried to ship it out of the US I have to sign away my life and get permission
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> (I made an ESP32 board and had to jump through hoops)
<DC-IRC> <mysthyc> In the same boat as you but with ESP8266, except it being a hobby project
<DC-IRC> <Tonymac32> so NXP has the same model, you can use their processors with all hardware encryption disabled
