<amhieu> hi, i new to this hobby. just want to ask what make armbian more popular on orange pi than ubuntu ?
<DC-IRC>
<amhieu> sry for stupid question
<nekomancer[m]>
did ubuntu really work there?
<DC-IRC>
<amhieu> on the site does have option to download yes ?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Actually its mostly in reality personal choice and sometimes some distros "do" work better than others however I always prefer to start with going with personal choice and try to figure out how to make things work... (I have been doing this a long time though)
<DC-IRC>
<nicod_sbc> Armbian has regular updates. Has both Ubuntu and Debian versions. Not just one version. Armbian has a crew of people who care. Orange Pi provided images used to be the worst around. And that brought many to Armbian.
<DC-IRC>
<nicod_sbc> Orange Pi even cloned the Armbian project to adapt to their needs, but to my knowledge that died because of lack of knowledge.

<dongie1818> what is the purpose for hiding kernel boot messages by default? Now I'm staring at a board that does nothing and I can't debug it because someone decided kernel messages are haram

<dongie1818> welp, I just switched to ubunto focal instead, that doens't hide boot messages and works.

<nicod_sbc> You are free to go your own way! Use uart if you want full readable boot and kernel messages.
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Most people don't car about these messages. Almost all distributions do that. Simple enough to bring them back. In case of armbian increase verbosity to 7 in armbianEnv.txt

<barrowofdirt> Been running the Ubuntu Jammy on my Orange Pi 5+ for a while, but I get a single kernel thread every time I boot using 3% of one core all the time no matter what, to the point where the login screen always says the load is 12 or 13% at the very lowest. Any ideas on this?
<DC-IRC>

<okehgamingtvfan> Yes
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> There's a parameter you might need to pass to the boot line to turn polling off... let me find it... high load occurs otherwise sometimes otherwise

<tenkawa42> trying to find the non-rpi generic string to test
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I know it can be easily tested on the Broadcom SBCs.. not on the OrangePI 5+ the same way though
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> Welcome to the future
<DC-IRC>
<speakertomeat> @.gentooman Either go with key based auth only, or at least install fail2ban
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> As far as I know... people were thrashing connection random attempts to ssh since the internet existed... I use to have logs set up in the 90's and out monitor systems would send out some crazy numbers of attempts

<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> And moving ssh to non-port 22 is useless because its almost instantaneous to find the actual protocol connection itself..
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> So yeah use keys or start blocking sources at the routers/firewalls
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> And be prepared to block a lot
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> @.gentooman
<DC-IRC>
<.gentooman> Well i alrdy use key based auth
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> @speakertomeat Notice how it seems there's not been any real "advancements" in this area in recent days
