Hi, i just tried to use the latest image on a Raspi3 booting without an inserted SD card but it seems the PI is not able to identify the filesystem for booting. The difference to RaspiOS is the used filesystem. Armbian is using EFI, i have read it should work also with EFI but that's the only difference i identifed.
<mr_claus>
Just found this statement "Note: Do not try to use GPT for the partition scheme or 0xef (EFI System Partition) for the type, as these are unsupported by the CPU-embedded bootloader."

rpi needs a FAT formated 1st partition indeed
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> which image you are trying? they must boot

<mr_claus>
latest jammy image provides GPT and a ef partition which was not found during the boot process. Bullseye would be nice but it's even not possible to compile it, probably because RPI support is brand new?
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> that bug was fixes, but perhaps images needs to be rebuilt
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> use automated community images
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> bullseye is not supported because we re-use flashing utils from ubuntu which are half broken in debian
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> when we will move flashing to our standard tools, but time is always an issue
<mr_claus>
flashing utils are mtd-utils?
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> no no
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> debian / ubuntu has its own flash-kernel or something package to cover flashing scenarios for varios hw
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> we store flashing instructions with each u-boot package
LanDi has joined #armbian
<Herc>
btw, just out of curiosity I flashed the latest rpi4b img, it works fine on a rpi4b 4GB
<Herc>
but i dont like ubuntu :(
<mr_claus>
indeed, i prefer Debian, but i will try to use the community image on my rpi3b
<Herc>
were did you get it from? official mirrors dont offer any rpi3 images
LanDi has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<Herc>
i c, still only "jammy" images :(
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> armbian ubuntu is not Ubuntu. Its based on, important packages came from Armbian anyway, snap is removed and most of ubuntu thing
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> didn't even all mighty RMS recommended some Ubuntu clone as a perfect build?
<Herc>
well, when I tried a jammy img for oc2 recently, firefox insisted to use "snap" for install/update :(
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> on armbian desktop images this should not be the case
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> both chromimum and firefox are non snap versions
<Herc>
nvm, none of current the odroidc2 images did boot on my oc2, I had to use Armbian2022-02, k.5.10.yy bullseye from the archives
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> stabilising builds costs are thausands of hours
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> and not a single one is comopensated. now feel the frustration
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> and it still fails ...
<Herc>
meanwhile dist-upgraded to 5.10.147-meson64 #22.08.4 SMP PREEMPT Fri Oct 7 - works very well
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> dist upgrade is not critical if kernel / boot loader are not changed
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> boot loader is manual upgrade in any case ... with new image its upgraded by default
<Herc>
anyways, thx for all your work!

<ManoftheSea> 0xef is an MBR type
<Armbian-Discord>
<ManoftheSea> GPT in gpart labels it ef01
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> You need to use u-boot on the Pi anyway to use UEFI.

<ManoftheSea> Two years ago
<Armbian-Discord>
<ManoftheSea> In other words, just like we requested, it is now possible to boot the Pi 4 from just an ESP, be it GPT or MBR, or be it located on SD or USB
<Armbian-Discord>
<ManoftheSea> Oh, that's a 4.
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> the pi3 can also boot from usb but it needs to be setup to do so. doesn't work out of the box.
<Armbian-Discord>
<ManoftheSea> Herc had the 4, Claus the 3
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> i haven't done it in forever but something needs to be added to the config.txt to trigger if I recall correctly.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tonymac32> Re-introduced a couple Pis to my home setup, both running volumio
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tonymac32> Pi 2 with the 32 bit SoC
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tonymac32> Would have been a couple of the tinkers I have all over but Volumio images are epic broken for reasons unknown. Their build strategy is... Interesting sonI:m not debugging for them

<IgorPec> hey, yes, but it can wait for him, i was sick whole week. have insane big pile of work in front
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> yay, glad it works for armbian. 😄 Quite proud of the free infrastructure my company is starting to offer the OSS community (armbian is the first project we're helping with mirroring).

<dave> excited to see if I've done a good enough job for this to work well under load 😛
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> @dave I'll volunteer next week if you two need to do some connectivity testing too
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Been needing something to test out my new upgrade with lol
<Armbian-Discord>
<dave> that'd be appreciated. Manually forcing https://mirror.ai.moda/armbian/apt/ as your mirror and letting me know how the perf is would be great.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Will do once I'm back on the home setup (I'm out of the house on my hotspot at the moment... not nearly as nice connection and only a pinebook pro compared to my macbook pro at home lol)
