<steev>
i'm just using the debian kernel on my pbp (well, kali, but still) and sleep works here on it (5.18.2)
<archetech_n2>
liar!
<steev>
i have an uptime of 1 day, 4 hours without having been plugged in, but okay
<steev>
getting it to come out of sleep here is just hitting the power button
<archetech_n2>
is that sleep to hdd ot ram?
<steev>
whatever the default is
<archetech_n2>
or
<steev>
i never set it up
<archetech_n2>
so armbian but deb kern is only diff?
<steev>
the only thing uncommented in my /etc/systemd/sleep.conf file is SuspendState=freeze
<steev>
no, it's kali, running kali
<steev>
which is based on debian testing, so armbian's debian stuff should be similar
<archetech_n2>
guess Macer needs to try that build
<steev>
i am running of emmc, if it makes a difference
<steev>
at some point, i'll get around to getting the nvme adapter
<archetech_n2>
I have no horse in that race but he sure is vocal about it
<archetech_n2>
im running KDE on custom build N2+
<steev>
gnome here, at least at the moment, normally i'm in sway
<archetech_n2>
got gnome 42.2 too both are great
<Macer>
huh?
<archetech_n2>
read ^
<Macer>
steev: your dmesg shows actual suspend? not s2idle?
<Macer>
i had to use manjaro lts kernel and levinboot to make it work. nvme does not work at all because pci won't go to sleep
<Macer>
oh
<Macer>
SuspendState=mem is what you need
<Macer>
and it won't workr if you set it
<archetech_n2>
you said ya wanted to disk not mem
<Macer>
no. i was working on mem
<Macer>
but freeze isn't disk either heh. it's s2idle
<steev>
will see what happens, worst case, i lose my 1 day of uptime on a laptop that sits off to the side idle 90% of the time
<Macer>
well...
<Macer>
what will happen.. depending on what version of uboot you're running (or armbian runs)
<Macer>
is your emmc will require 5 reboots to work again lol
<Macer>
no idea what that's about
<Macer>
better way is: # cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
<Macer>
if you see [deep] then it's set for suspend to ram
<steev>
2022.04+dfsg-2 for my u-boot
<Macer>
then # echo mem > /sys/power/state
<Macer>
and it will go to sleep right away (as root)
<Macer>
try to hit that power button again and tell me what happens :) because i was going around in circles with uboot + mainlineish kernels
<Macer>
it's even more fun with uboot when you use a serial cable. because you get that warning to restart your board
<steev>
correct, it doesn't suspend to mem correctly, but just hold power button for ~ 10 seconds, then release, then hit it again and boots up just fine, no 5 reboots here
<Macer>
ah. usually depending on uboot it takes like 5 reboots to snap back :)
<Macer>
yah so far the only way i've been able to get suspend to work is by using levinboot
<Macer>
but levinboot requires its own partition for payload
<archetech_n2>
at what point do you macer take what ya can get steev has sleep working
<steev>
archetech_n2: he wants more, and i don't blame him, but at this point, probably needs to dig in to u-boot and write the support themself
<Macer>
he doesn't tho. s2idle was probably working. and it eats way too much power
<Macer>
steev: or ditch uboot and use levinboot heh
<Macer>
which. btw.. .boots super fast compared to uboot
<steev>
okay
<Macer>
although. no matter what. nvme + suspend to ram isn't working
<Macer>
i actually just pulled my nvme since i have a 128GB emmc
<steev>
if the pbp were a primary machine of mine, i'd probably care, but my daily driver is currently the lenovo yoga c630 woa device, though it will soon (enough) be the thinkpad x13s
<Macer>
i'll throw it in something else ... emmc is plenty fast anyways and if i really need some bulk storage i have a 512GB sd
<Macer>
yah. i wanted to use the pbp as my day to day
<steev>
mine has a 128gb emmc in the pbp
<steev>
you can grab any of the odroid emmc cards if pine64 are out of stock
<Macer>
i can do that now. i was keeping it on all day at work lol
<Macer>
and that was stupid. needing a charger for a day of work with an arm based laptop just seems wrong. might as well use an alienware laptop at that point
<Macer>
ah. i just got the nvme adapter, a serial cable, and the 128GB emmc
<steev>
i can do that too, but the c630 is 8 cores at 3ghz/1.8ghz, versus the pbp's 4 cores at ~2GHz, but more importantly, the c630 has 8gb ram
<Macer>
the serial cable and nvme adapter were super cheap tho and since i was paying the from china shipping... seemed better to get it all at once
* archetech_n2
sometimes ya just gotta use intel what I do
<Macer>
archetech_n2: tbh. sometimes suspend doesn't work on intel based boards either heh
<Macer>
(in linux)
<Macer>
not sure if it has gotten better but in my experience it is hit or miss
<Macer>
proper suspend on the pinebook pro tho was driving me mad
<Macer>
also. earlier. when i had a resume issue. it resumed fine. my issue was more pam_winbind related than anything else. seems like coming off the ad network doesn't work too well. i've been digging into trying to sort that out but that's a tough one to test
<steev>
just disconnect it before suspend, with a network config to do so

<Macer>
steev: yah i thought about doing that but didn't. i just added a cached_login to /etc/pam.d/system-auth to see what happens (which should be pulled from /etc/security/pam_winbind.conf ... did the same thing today that i did yesterday. just came off the network and went to work and opened it and tried to unlock it.
<Macer>
worked fine. so maybe pam_winbind.conf isn't working properly for some reason
