<J24k43>
if you need 5 extruder .. besides rainbow vases there is not so much -- easier to buy the filament color you need
<InPhase>
Well... I want color mixing so that I can mix rigid and flexible filaments. :)
<J24k43>
while Ultimaker 5 with the dual extruder is something as you can switch for support material .. or IDEX systems
AzAv8r has joined #openscad
<J24k43>
they don't mix well - you sure can have hard and soft TPU
<InPhase>
This is my multicolor dream. A printer where I can do multicolor for some pretty things, but where I can also explore the material properties of filament flexibility gradients.
<InPhase>
I'm sure I can track down some that will mix. I've seen things like flexible PLA, for example. That probably mixes okay.
<J24k43>
you find this in industrial jet printing systems
<InPhase>
If not that, I'd try other combinations.
<J24k43>
but a dual mixing nozzle is something you get for $10 on amazon
<J24k43>
.. writing some code to control is easy but integrating this into a slicer is some work
<J24k43>
i mean we can't get color into the 3mf from scad - Ü
<J24k43>
and consumer slicer are quite limited in regards of color .. and gradients would require triangle color information
<J24k43>
and calculated into some volume color .. as you probably want to have a hard core that is soft on the outside
<J24k43>
that wouldn't be possible with 3mf
<J24k43>
you would need some gradient spline/bezier defined
<J24k43>
to create the layer map
<InPhase>
Yeah. It's a problem that spins in the back of my mind still. The only thing I ever thought of is augmented SDF straight to gcode.
<InPhase>
But this will require some sort of special SDF syntax.
<J24k43>
or you have a soft and hard 3D structure that are interlocking in high resolution to create a changing zone
<InPhase>
I haven't quite sorted out the perfect syntax for that. You want to be able to write operations that make hard boundaries, and operations that make CMYKW type gradients.
<J24k43>
which could be printed with AMS/MMU or dual nozzles
<InPhase>
That means you would have to expose the color info to every layer of the SDF, and design everything around it, having operations be vectorized over colors by default, but giving all functions access to the color vector to make nuanced mathematical mutations to this.
<J24k43>
and nobody cares about the color inside - only if the material properties change
<InPhase>
But you do when it's about flexible filaments.
<InPhase>
Also you do when transparent filaments are allowed.
<J24k43>
CMYKWA
<InPhase>
CMYKWAF ;)
<J24k43>
F for flexibility?
<InPhase>
Yep.
<InPhase>
Although the F score probably needs to select from a whole different series of CMYKWA inputs.
<J24k43>
ah IPv6 .. nah that is just the color information per voxel
<InPhase>
You'd need flexible and rigid of each CMYKWA.
<InPhase>
We're at 56 bits so far, so it fits!
<InPhase>
One more can go do the next useful thing we think of.
<InPhase>
Conductive copper infused, maybe.
<J24k43>
and strength / impact / e-module - tensile
<J24k43>
but the question why you combine that .. also like melting points
<J24k43>
refraction might be something
<J24k43>
moth eyes have eliminated reflection by a refraction gradient caused by hairs between the facets
<InPhase>
:) Transparent filament with two indices of refraction would be very epic.
<InPhase>
As long as one could print with good enough infill to get rid of layer lines and such.
<J24k43>
if you only could print them seamless .. we already have plastics with very different refraction indexes
<J24k43>
guess you need 100nm resolution minimum to print something useful for optics
<InPhase>
Well, unless you can get the lines to blend nicely.
<J24k43>
for fiber they just but a big block with a mantel .. and stretch until you get that fiber that had internal core with a different refraction
<J24k43>
so some vacuum printing and curing might help but you can't print a lens into a block
<J24k43>
but printing metamaterial is some hot shit
<J24k43>
you could print batteries
<InPhase>
J24k43: For fiber levels of optical control, things like the alignment of the plastic filament fibers can matter, which is impacted by the stretching or other forming process.
<InPhase>
J24k43: Also for CDs and DVDs.
<J24k43>
there was this speed printing .. where you got pattern by different printing speeds at defined locations
<InPhase>
Yeah, I remember seeing that.
<InPhase>
I got some effects like that on a transparent print by accident / defect. :)

Do we have the creator of threads.scad library in this channel?
<teepee>
which threads.scad exactly?
<cart_man>
teepee: Well I hvae a file here that is named threads.scad and its Super useful. -> Created 2016-2017 by Ryan A. Colyer.
* teepee
pokes InPhase
<teepee>
yep, I've used it a couple of times for very nicely printable threads
<cart_man>
teepee: Yea I sould actually show you what I made. I love that lib. I made big nobs with threads on them to put cables through. And it makes it sealable
