why is git so bad at merging renamed files. is there a way to rebase or merge an old PR without it saying every file has been deleted?

i didn't think file renaming was so problematic in 2022

I have not actually tried a big rename on a project with the numbers of changes we have here. Perhaps it would have had the same issues if you had tried the merge or rebase without the renames?

Maybe you could try some hackery (in a separate directory or something to see if it works okay) like making a branch off of master from right before your renames, merging that in, and then separately merge the rename step?
