< jarvis_> Hello mentors, I had my mid-semester exams going on and hence was offline this last week. I have previously discussed my idea on implementing the deep learning architectures ResNet, Spatial Transformer Network, and the Inception v4 with zoq. Now do I just submit a proposal with Google after the applications open or do I need to do something else?

< Nax> rcurtin: Thanks, I am continuously working on mlpack's build pipeline
< trion> Hy all, what are some ways I can start contributing to mlpack? I went through issues but most seemed to be already assigned or had a PR
< zoq> trion: Hello and welcome; have you searched through the list archives for other messages about the project: http://mlpack.org/pipermail/mlpack/ There is a lot of information that has been written about this project over the
< zoq> past weeks. Unfortunately, keeping enough issues open for everyone isn't that easy, but I think especially for the Reinforcement Learning project, you can dive into the codebase by e.g. looking and implementing a simple agent; Policy Gradients is one sample but there are some other methods that might be interesting and easy to implement.

< SatrapRathore_> hello!! is this organization chosen for gsoc the first time this year??
< trion> Nope it has been part of GSoC in 2013, 2015 and 2016, there are old projects at bottom of project idea page
< SatrapRathore_> I am new here and want to start contributing to this organization.Which are the easy proposed ideas I can get started with?
< rcurtin> SatrapRathore_: I'd suggest taking a look at these pages for pointers: http://www.mlpack.org/gsoc.html and http://www.mlpack.org/involved.html
< rcurtin> those pages have links to useful resources and how to find easy bugs to start contributing with
< SatrapRathore_> thanks

< zoq> rcurtin: How was the race? Good position?
thyrix has quit [Quit: Page closed]
< rcurtin> zoq: yeah, it was a fun day... I actually did two races, one was an hour-long "ironman" where I went from 23rd to 6th
< zoq> That sounds pretty good to me from 23rd to 6th.
< rcurtin> the second event I would have won, but my kart was not good so I could not hold onto first place, but I was still able to finish 2nd so I got to go home with a trophy, which is nice
< rcurtin> I'd link to a picture, but the airline internet is so bad I can't even get images to load reliably :)
< zoq> oh, nice, can't wait to see the picture :)
< zoq> I guess, you need your own car to avoid malfunctions ... 'just' need to find a sponsor :)
diehumblex has joined #mlpack
< rcurtin> yeah, with the 'arrive and drive' style it is definitely a distribution of karts, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes not
< rcurtin> ok, finally got it to load... I think these are public pictures
< zoq> nice, number 23?
< rcurtin> yeah
< rcurtin> the kart was not doing well... it must have had an oil leak or worn out piston rings, the exhaust spewed out a cloud of burning oil
< zoq> are these two guys professionals, it kinda looks like they are
< rcurtin> I would have had a different kart, but the driver who had the kart I was supposed to have in the previous race crashed it...
< zoq> oh, okay, I mean 2nd is really good
< rcurtin> hah, no, they just left their suit all the way on for the pictures
< rcurtin> it seems like the people in LA are very concerned with image... they all have nice suits, nice helmets, nice everything regardless of how fast they are :)
< zoq> very concerned with image ... just noted the shirt :)
< rcurtin> yeah I bought that somewhere on the internet... it gets a lot of comments when I wear it

< kartik_> <zoq> my old school laptop crashed for the third time this year.. fortunately pushed the commit before that happened..
< kartik_> so i tried to use the feed forward neural network but wasnt able to get that from the test code
< kartik_> just wanted to mention that the include layer have been changed..
< kartik_> and faced some other issues in getting to use it..
< kartik_> so i have almost modified the link_gene, neuro_gene and genome to get the feed forward neural net ..
< kartik_> should i use that or can u provide a basic code for ann feed forward neural net with weights accessible with single forward pass ..
< kartik_> about to complete genome and then will try the test on mario tomorrow .. ( :'( will have to install everything)

< zoq> etotientz: Hello there!
< Trion> hello!!
< etotientz> After this command sudo apt-get install libmlpack-dev do I have to install the dependencies?
< Trion> rcurtin: Congrats for the race :D
< Trion> yes, ubuntu will handle the rest
< zoq> kartik_: The third time, that is really unlucky, hope you haven't lost important data.
< zoq> kartik_: If you like you can test it with your modification, I can also rewrite the model based on the ann code, you just need the weights right?
< etotientz> I see, dependencies are also installed with that command!

< etotientz> in which directory do we type $ make ?
< Trion> in the root of the mlpack folder, you don't need to type $
< Trion> wait wait... in the build folder, my bad
< etotientz> But it says: make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
< etotientz> I only have CMake,CMakeFiles,src and CMakeCache.txt in build folder
< zoq> etotientz: just do 'mkdir build && cd build && cmake .. && make'
< etotientz> i m sorry but it is showing the same error.
< zoq> What's the output of 'ls ..'?
< etotientz> CMake CMakeCache.txt CMakeFiles src
< rcurtin> did the CMake configuration fail?

< etotientz> is it necessary to install mlpack to usr/local/lib after it is has built?
< Trion> it makes it easier to use in your programs, not necessary just convenient
