does -bufsize have any effect for VAAPI encoders? I remember with x264, if you're targeting CBR or constrained VBR, that you should set bufsize to something like 2x the max bitrate
<tm512>
I haven't been putting that on my VAAPI -c:v lines, so I'm wondering if that could be another source of frames getting lost, if the buffer is too small

<tm512>
interesting, so setting -bufsize 10M on a 5Mbit stream appears to be preventing frame drops outside of the initial drops when establishing the connection to RTMP
<tm512>
got one extra drop beyond that but I've been having this going for an hour at this point, which seems better than before

tm512 Can you share your config file for streaming <video> ?
jafa has joined #ffmpeg
<noobaroo>
I've only been able to get nginx-rtmp to work (that only supports FLV files), can't figure out how to do html5 video / mp4 streaming
<jafa>
seeing something odd since upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04... I can use vaapi hw acceleration (Ryzen 7000-series CPU) ok for one transcode but if I try to start a second transcode (new ffmpeg instance) it fails with "libva: vaGetDriverNames() failed with operation failed"
<jafa>
I don't know for sure it is the same command line but when I was testing before the OS upgrade I could encode up to 10 video sessions ok
<jafa>
I am transcoding using sw decode and vaapi h264 encode
<tm512>
noobaroo: I don't know exactly what you're asking for. I'm using RTMP
<furq>
you can't directly stream mp4 to a video tag
<furq>
that's what hls and dash are for
javabean has joined #ffmpeg
<noobaroo>
furq Can you help point me in the right direction for HLS and DASH MP4 streaming? I just want to stream videos over LAN so I can play on other devices by entering my main computer IP. I got RTMP to work.
<tm512>
so I'm guessing bufsize had no impact on things, since it's only used for rate control evidently, and it seems like I can basically reproduce the same results without setting it. I'm basically at a loss at this point
<tm512>
as far as I can see, the lower the bitrate, the fewer frames I drop, yet it doesn't seem to be my connection since OBS has no issues at these same bitrates.
<tm512>
yet, I don't have these issues with recording to a file
<noobaroo>
furq When you say anything, what other options are there? I only followed the nginx-rtmp guide so I have nginx installed and would rather not install another web server. I know nothing about web servers
<tm512>
if it's not an issue with my connection then I can only guess that it's some issue between the encoder and the flv+rtmp muxer
<tm512>
on ffmpeg's status line, are the duped and dropped frames specifically from the encoder, or can the muxer contribute to the count? if the latter, then I guess there could be an issue between the flv muxer and the rtmp protocol
<tm512>
this is just driving me crazy. I can't think of any reason why I'd get bitrate-dependent frame dropping other than my connection bandwidth, but my bandwidth would cause issues for OBS too, and it just doesn't
