Back when I switched from Artix to CRUX, I got so depressed by the huge amount of dependencies every single DE uses, I ended up hating all of them, and love WMs even more than I already did.

Seems like crux.nu is taken down.
<r0ni>
hrm crux-arm.nu works but the cert is expired, maybe server problem
<remiliascarlet>
Maybe a different server?
<remiliascarlet>
"It's not just you! crux.nu is down." So it's confirmed.

The last good Linux distro, better known as CRUX, refuses to boot on 2 computers I tried to install it on, so I guess I'm just done with Linux altogether at this point.

Regarding crux.nu: The "ports -u" command still gives "connection refused" for me.
<blackfrog78>
And https://git.crux.nu/ invoked in Firefox returns "502 Bad Gateway".
<cruxbridge>
<tim> yep, known. Thanks.
<cruxbridge>
<tim> it should be back up and running now for the most part

Tim, nice to know that you officially consider the most loyal section of the CRUX userbase "loonies". Wow, just wow...
<cruxbridge>
<tim> Would you like an appology?
<remiliascarlet>
I'll let you decide that part. Just the attitude alone says quite a lot.
<cruxbridge>
<tim> Good, because you are not getting anything from me :) If you are offended you own that part, not me - I personally found it pretty funny
<remiliascarlet>
I'm not offended by it at all.
<cruxbridge>
<tim> So why are you expressing yourself like that? What is it you need?
<remiliascarlet>
Ever since I got put away as a so-called "conspiracy theorist" over a decade ago, it really takes a lot to get me offended.
<cruxbridge>
<tim> I told you once, I tell you again: this is a tech channel, a very specific one. Keep it on topic. Be nice. I wasn't attacking anybody, but you do feel attacked.
<remiliascarlet>
And I said it because, as I said, it's kind of like shitting on the people who help the most in providing free advertisement and promotion of a distro that would otherwise have disappeared into a black hole.
<cruxbridge>
<tim> Nobody asked you for advertisement or promotion. I don't owe you anything.
<cruxbridge>
<tim> In fact: I don't know you. Thats pretty much it.

#crux was never a tech channel. It was a place where CRUX users could discuss things and fellow CRUX users could hang out. Later #crux-devel was created for tech specific talk. I know, because I was there in the early days.
<SiFuh>
Anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

<ukky>
remiliascarlet: when I switched from grub to syslinux, it failed to load from ext4 with 64bit feature enabled. Maybe that is why your syslinux fails to load.
<remiliascarlet>
ukky: I'm already aware of that, and have already taken that into account.
<SiFuh>
ukky: ext4 as in the main system or as in /boot ?
<remiliascarlet>
And even if I would leave 64bit enabled, syslinux would just error out. But in my case, syslinux doesn't even show up at all.
<ukky>
SiFuh: any. syslinux will fail if that feature is on.
<SiFuh>
ukky: You didn't answer my question
<remiliascarlet>
No need for a /boot partition if you're in BIOS/Legacy mode.
<ukky>
SiFuh: I use separate /boot partition where syslinux is installed
<SiFuh>
remiliascarlet: I have a USB hard disk with CRUX on it. It worked fine for a long time. Now it doesn't even show SYSLINUX anymore.
<SiFuh>
So I have been booting with parrotOS and using chroot to access it.
<SiFuh>
ukky: And what FS is this /boot?
<ukky>
SiFuh: ext4
<SiFuh>
ukky: Why?
<remiliascarlet>
SiFuh: Maybe you could just make use of vmm/vmd on OpenBSD at this point, since that one can run OpenBSD and Linux VMs..
<remiliascarlet>
And all you need to access is SSH once you installed it there.
<ukky>
remiliascarlet: you need a proper code for MBR, and a proper code for boot record to load syslinux.
<SiFuh>
ukky: Only if it is BIOS/MBR
<SiFuh>
ext4 as /boot is not recommended as not all UEFI can support it anyway.
<remiliascarlet>
Yeah, makes sense you need proper code for MBR only if it's MBR...
<ukky>
SiFuh: yes. UEFI it's another story.
<SiFuh>
ukky: So you are not using UEFI?
<ukky>
remiliascarlet: not only MBR.
<SiFuh>
ukky: Only MBR
<ukky>
SiFuh: Switched form UEFI to Legavy boot after switching from grub to syslinux.
<SiFuh>
Then that is okay to have ext4 as /boot then.
<ukky>
SiFuh: not only MBR. Boot record on boot partition too.
<SiFuh>
But using UEFI, I'd stick to something more supported like FAT and ext2
<ukky>
SiFuh: So, when you do 'extlinux --install', you actually update boot record on the target device. Do not confuse with boot record in MBR.
<SiFuh>
It's specifically for BIOS systems.
<SiFuh>
If you look at the row UEFI both MBR and GPT that command doesn't exist because it is not needed. UEFI doesn't care about it.
<ukky>
SiFuh: I did not say that this boot record is used by UEFI BIOS.
<SiFuh>
remiliascarlet: Your system is UEFI right?
<remiliascarlet>
SiFuh: BIOS.
<SiFuh>
Ohhh
<SiFuh>
Did you do as ukky suggested then?
<remiliascarlet>
Yes.
<SiFuh>
ukky: :-P
<SiFuh>
Why are you all still using legacy?
<ukky>
remiliascarlet: did you enabled 'active' flag (bootable) in the MBR?
<remiliascarlet>
And what he suggests is no different from what the CRUX documentation suggests (apart from the 64bit feature part, which is still not mentioned to this day).
<SiFuh>
remiliascarlet: Isn't that my stuff in the CRUX documentation?
<remiliascarlet>
SiFuh: Because it's hardware from before UEFI has been a thing outside of Apple hardware.
<remiliascarlet>
ukky: Yes.
<ukky>
SiFuh: Switched back to Legacy boot because I need 'extlinux --once' feature, plus I don't like FAT, as it is not reliable.
<ukky>
remiliascarlet: can you grab MBR and first sector of your boot device and post 'hexdump -C' of those two sectors?
<SiFuh>
ukky: Didn't she say she installed OpenBSD instead?
<ukky>
SiFuh: than no need for further investigation/debugging
<remiliascarlet>
ukky: I already replaced the installation with OpenBSD. Not willing to spend days on compiling a kernel, only to see my installation failed anyway.
<SiFuh>
ukky: ;-)
<ukky>
remiliascarlet: cool
