jaeger changed the topic of #crux to: CRUX 3.6 | Homepage: https://crux.nu/ | Ports: https://crux.nu/portdb/ https://crux.ninja/portdb/ | Logs: https://libera.irclog.whitequark.org/crux/
<jaeger> Are you using firefox or firefox-bin? Do you have pulseaudio installed?
<zou0> Firefox-bin
<zou0> i thought firefox-bin had support for alsa
<jaeger> I think it's the other way around but I might be misremembering
<farkuhar> back in the days of CRUX 3.1, maybe firefox-bin came with alsa support. But CRUX's reputation for gradual changes is still at the mercy of upstream development, which in the case of firefox led to alsa losing its status as a tier-1 supported audio backend.
<farkuhar> so it's the firefox port that you have to compile, if you want alsa as an audio backend.
<zou0> ls -a
<zou0> oops
<zou0> ill take a look
<farkuhar> zou0: your suspicion about firefox-bin and alsa support reminded me of some lines I drafted for an update to section 2.2 of the CRUX handbook ...
<farkuhar> "Although CRUX strives to use new features as they become available, you will never have to deal with a frenzy of innovation that leaves you with an unrecognizable system. A CRUX user from the early years could abandon the distribution for two decades, then install the latest release in 2022 and feel right at home."
<zou0> this is a nice thing
<farkuhar> SiFuh: I know you're pretty satisfied with your MoreFine mini-PC purchase, but did you ever consider a similar form factor with passive heat dissipation? Here's a model that I just learned about: https://fit-iot.com/web/
<SiFuh> farkuhar: yes I saw it before. I wanted RYZEN though.
<SiFuh> Pretty cool though

<elderK> farkuhar: /usr/share/pipewire contains a lot of config files.
<elderK> Which do I choose?
<elderK> And, did you need to make many (any) alterations to the config file?
<elderK> Hm, XDG_RUNTIME_DIR.
<elderK> Must be created on first login, removed on last logout.
<elderK> AH, pam_xdg might be useful

<farkuhar> SiFuh: RYZEN is also the cpu on my current desktop. A spacious case lets me run large-diameter fans at lower speeds for decent cooling, but even still the noise is sometimes noticeable. If it ever gets too annoying, I can easily transfer the entire motherboard into a passively-cooled case like this: https://streacom.com/products/db4-fanless-mini-itx-case/
<SiFuh> Farkur, speaking of cooling. I pumped the cooling systems water from the condenser into a car radiator with the fan connected to AC and it worked well. :-) 5 litres of water for 8 hours of cooling. Usually I use about 75 litres
<SiFuh> farkuhar: ^
<SiFuh> This is running a home distiller though
<SiFuh> My plan is to create an entirely closed cooling system. Just running the tests for now
<SiFuh> farkuhar: Interesting case, looks like in dusty places like this though it will require constant cleaning
<farkuhar> SiFuh: one of my Malaysian friends in university also set up a liquid cooling system for his cpu. Naturally there wasn't a home distiller he could tap into for the water, but his use of the university's water supply never bothered anyone.
<SiFuh> :-P
<ppetrov^> a friend of mine is obsessed with his PC being quiet. At some point he kept it in the wardrobe. he was happy
<SiFuh> I like the sound of the ambient drone server rooms make.
<ppetrov^> if i connect fans to the PSU cables (so not from the motherboard), how do I make them spin slower, so they do not produce too much noise? use 5V adapters?
<SiFuh> Just install a Potentiometer
<ppetrov^> in the computer?
<SiFuh> Why not?
<SiFuh> Lian Li cases have this option on some models such as the Armorlite
<SiFuh> You could even use something like this
<ppetrov^> thanks, I'll check
<ppetrov^> still have not tried if the fans wil start at 5v
<SiFuh> Red = 5 and yellow = 12 usually
<SiFuh> The fan I am using for the car radiator requires 15 amps 12 volts
<SiFuh> Had to order a custom power supply
<ppetrov^> hmm,,, i should dust the pc... later
