<Tonymac32> More seriously, I have an ESP32 microcontroller board I manufactured in China for sale on the Mouser catalog, and it's $35. I assure you this is an order of magnitude less complex and costly than an ARM Linux solution.

as far as making an SBC goes: the chip pretty much determines what the software side looks like :)

making your own custom board is relatively cheap, but it still won't be cheaper than buying one, so you really should have a good reason for going custom
