Guest1: something like bbwarn ?
<Guest1>
bbnote and bbwarn would do, but first I need to capture the output from a script that is invoked.
<landgraf>
redirection to temporary file should work (or keep in variable)

which task is responsible for copying a recipe's sysroot-destdir components to the global sysroots-components?
<yates>
also, it is documented that do_populate_sysroot populates the recipe's sysroot-destdir, but from where? from the recipe's image directory?

I upgraded python 3.8% to 3.9% in dunfell (grabbed python dir from honister), but it calls python3-native_3.8% instead of 3.9%. I tried to set in local.conf and modified the baseversion in python3-dir.bbclass, but without success. Any suggestion?

and that the github one has all the files that my people need

?

hahaha. let me get links to the github one

<fbre>
Hi! I tried IMAGE_INSTALL_append += " trace-cmd" but Nothing RPROVIDES trace-cmd. How can I add that tool to my distro?
<fbre>
I already switched on several CONFIG settings to 'y'
<fbre>
...in the kernel config
<yates>
does do_populate_sysroot handle two things: 1) populating the recipe's sysroot-destdir, and 2) populating the global sysroots-components? both from the recipe's image folder?
<yates>
i'm guessing - i don't see this explicitly stated in the docs

<ecdhe>
I have a custom layer. It's installed bblayers.conf, and I believe that is working because if I set LAYERSERIES_COMPAT to something other than dunfell, I get an error, and if I change LAYERDEPENDS with some unknown value, I also get warned on that.
<ecdhe>
However, my PREFERRED_PROVIDER_virtual/kernel setting in layer.conf appears to be ignored
zpfvo has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
zpfvo has joined #yocto
<ecdhe>
When I try to build an image, I get the error "Nothing PROVIDES 'virtual/kernel'", along with several options
<ecdhe>
One of them is "linux-vendor-dev PROVIDES virtual/kernel but was skipped: Set PREFERRED_PROVIDER_virtual/kernel to linux-vendor-dev to enable it"
<ecdhe>
However that is the value that I've already set.
<ecdhe>
If I `bitbake linux-vendor-dev' to build it directly, I get, "Nothing PROVIDES linux-vendor-dev", "linux-vendor-dev was skipped: Set PREFERRED_PROVIDER_virtual/kernel to linux-vendor-dev to enable it"
<ecdhe>
linux-vendor-dev is provided in my meta-vendor-machine layer, and I extend it with a linux-vendor-dev.bbappend in my own layer so I can patch the kernel
<qschulz>
ecdhe: this variable is usually set in machine configuration files
<qschulz>
changing variables from a layer.conf is really not a good practice
<ecdhe>
So bitbake appears to be ignoring "PREFERRED_PROVIDER_virtual/kernel" in layer.conf. If I set it to an arbitrary value like "dimwool" it doesn't trigger any changes.
<ecdhe>
qschulz: thanks
<qschulz>
ecdhe: bitbake -e virtual/kernel
<qschulz>
and look for the line starting with PREFERRED_PROVIDER and see its history above
<qschulz>
I'm surprised linux-vendor-dev is not built even when explicitly requested by bitbake
<ecdhe>
qschulz: that bitbake invocation gives me the same error output as when I `bitbake vendor-image'
<qschulz>
I didn't think preferred_provider would skip this
<qschulz>
ecdhe: yeah obviously, didn't think of that :/
zyga-mbp has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<qschulz>
ecdhe: set it to something that exists, e.g. linux-yocto in local.conf
<qschulz>
maybe the PREFERRED_PROVIDER is overridden in your machine conf or distro conf file or somewhere else with a = instead of ?= or ??=
<qschulz>
I wouldn't be too surprised, this is usually done in machine conf and you rarely want it to be overridden
<ecdhe>
qschulz: oe provides the core layers, vendor provides a bootable layer to demo their machine, and our layer provides an application and kernel tweaks
lucaceresoli has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<ecdhe>
So overriding the kernel from the layer.conf let us play with different kernels without modifying the vendor's layer.
<ecdhe>
vendor's machine.conf has the line PREFERRED_PROVIDER_virtual/kernel ?= "linux-vendor-dev"
<qschulz>
ecdhe: create different machines instead of playing with layer.conf
<qschulz>
it's bad that including a layer changes which kernel is built
<qschulz>
try to set the variable from local.conf first also, to see if it's an issue with having it in layer.conf or not

<ecdhe>
qschulz: local.conf was overriding all other settings which was why my layer.conf setting was not getting picked up (even for syntax correction)
<ecdhe>
It was an exploratory change I made and never reverted. Because build/ isn't version controlled I didn't see it in the diffs
<ecdhe>
at a technical level, layer.conf is just fine for setting a kernel if a higher priority config file isn't overriding it
hpsy has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<ecdhe>
thanks so much for your help qschulz

How can I have ptests run automatically? Obvious way popping into my head is to leverate testimage to connect to the target and invoke `ptest-runner` there. Any "cleaner" ways?
