* pabs3 prefers to get firmware not from vendors but from real distros, with public source, build logs, reproducible builds etc
<pabs3> vendor stuff tends to get abandoned earlier, never be mainlined, more buggy etc
<Tenkawa> pabs3: Yeah... I heart ya...but you don't always have an option.. you have to start with a baseline if you want something useable
<Tenkawa> er hear
<pabs3> :)
* pabs3 wonders when distros are going to start packaging coreboot, edk2-platforms etc
<Tenkawa> never unless they change the licensing
<Tenkawa> distros are picky...
<pabs3> both of those are FOSS :)
<pabs3> edk2 itself (for VMs) is in Debian main for eg, just not edk2-platforms, the hardware support package
<pabs3> coreboot is also in Debian, but only builds the utils, no hardware support packages
<Tenkawa> coreboot is not going to be a big deal... edk2 still has Intel licenses in it
<Tenkawa> According to what I am reading
<pabs3> hmm, edk2 itself is in Debian main already though, so the Intel parts must be separated
<Tenkawa> Debian "does" have a non-free repo
<pabs3> but yeah, non-free stuff pervades the firmware space
<pabs3> its in main not non-free
<Tenkawa> interesting..
<Tenkawa> Thets good to hear
<pabs3> even ostensibly libre firmware sometimes has proprietary compilers/tools as build dependencies
* pabs3 gathered some open firmware links on https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware/Open
<Tenkawa> I am fighting more vendor drivers atm than I care to on both arm64 and riscv
<pabs3> at least those often have public libre source :)
<Tenkawa> Unfortunately not what I'm working on (u-boot ATF)
<Tenkawa> trying to interfacw those to the SoC
<Tenkawa> er interface
<Tenkawa> running into some hardware issues with newer SoCs and mainline porting
<Tenkawa> 15 years ago I was much better at this when this was my day job.... now its just a hobby to keep me busy all day
<pabs3> ATF is in Debian main too I thought, guess vendor forks are very different, like vendor forks of edk2 aren't public either
<Tenkawa> ATF source isn't... trusted firmware is very hard to find
<pabs3> yep, ATF source package in Deian is arm-trusted-firmware
<Tenkawa> no
<Tenkawa> thats binaries..
* pabs3 goes to inspect the source package
<Tenkawa> just an api interface
<Tenkawa> if its not I would really be happy to hear .. I'd have a lot to start researching
joev has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<pabs3> looks like mostly C source code: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/d2df39d0/
<pabs3> 3 "data" files though
joev has joined #riscv
<pabs3> the data files look like maybe encryption keys
<Tenkawa> its thw base platform code (read the readme)... still doesn't include vendor "locked" info
<Tenkawa> er the
<Tenkawa> this is framework to create an ATF
<pabs3> ah, I see
<pabs3> so similar to the edk2 situation
<Tenkawa> yeah
<Tenkawa> I read This release provides a suitable starting point for productization of secure
<Tenkawa> world boot and runtime firmware, in either the AArch32 or AArch64 execution
<Tenkawa> states.
<Tenkawa> oopd take out first 2 words
<Tenkawa> nice for building new products though
* pabs3 checks what the arm-trusted-firmware deb contains
<Tenkawa> yeah thats what I did is pulled the deb
<Tenkawa> its got a lot of structure
<pabs3> "This package includes the firmware binaries."
<pabs3> looks like firmware binaries for a bunch of different platforms
<Tenkawa> Indeed... cheers for now..Be back tomorrow after meetings... fun fun

<rneese> do we know who is building the starfive imgs ?
<rneese> there are some major issues
<rneese> the current img is horriable for colorblind people
<la_mettrie> people at starfive tech. you won't find them here
<rneese> and the img is not auto resizing
<la_mettrie> they probably read your message if you post it on forum.rvspace.org
rurtty has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<jrtc27> there are rather more important bug reports they've not yet addressed that would take all of 5 minutes to fix
aerkiaga has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<conchuod> 🤔 should tell the StarFive people to try and get someone on here
* jrtc27 wonders if github-based login got fixed on forum.rvspace.org all these months later
<rneese> the issue is the nda thats holding them back
<jrtc27> ... nope
<conchuod> nda on what exactly
<conchuod> How is an NDA stopping them fixing bugs?
<rneese> the vpu driver code
<rneese> most the issue I see is the vpu what other issues
<jrtc27> all models report 4 GiB
<jrtc27> all models report hart 0 is usable by an OS
* conchuod waits for Jess to rant again
<jrtc27> which causes any OS that tries to use it to crash
<jrtc27> those important issues?
<rneese> thats a issue
<jrtc27> those are the most basic QA things
<rneese> I had not heard about that one
<conchuod> Do you read this IRC channel?
<jrtc27> the only reason their Linux images don't crash is because they override the firmware-provided device tree by vendoring a less broken one in the Linux image
<conchuod> (I think it's been discussion a half dozen times by now)
<rneese> when I can . been busy workingto fixissues with the builder we have been using forriscv imgs and cleaning out bugs we have
* jrtc27 shrugs
<jrtc27> anyway I should go flash the latest firmware and see if USB and/or NVMe at least work now
<rneese> also I spend more time on discord where we have been working to try and make a community for riscv
ldevulder has quit [Quit: Leaving]
jack_lsw has quit [Quit: Back to the real life]
<jrtc27> presumably that community is mostly users rather than the developers actually making the platforms work?

<rneese> having a single discord running and everything in 1 place easier to maintaiin

<davidlt> I feel like Discord is a new mIRC from 1990s
<davidlt> IRC is still alive, but mostly shifting technical folks towards Matrix
<davidlt> Teams/Slack/Zulip/Mattermost are more of closed silos mostly for developers, but there are exceptions (for example, governments are using those)

<jedix> I still haven't come up with a solution for signal without sms
<jrtc27> yeah it doesn't merge, it is a true switch, alas
<jrtc27> two slacks? slack has it all merged just fine
<jedix> work/not work slack
<jedix> I had to run an incognito tab and then my laptop would fire up its fan
<jrtc27> I guess your point is you don't want all of them all the time, but instead only want to see work or non-work as appropriate?
<jedix> I just couldn't isolate them wihtout my battery running down
<jedix> or, at all, really
<jedix> when I tried to open the second, it would just open the one I had running
