<NishanthMenon> just curious, so will ask - is there an lse arm instruction equivalent in risc-v (esp focussing on atomic ops across cpus)?

<palmer> though we don't have byte/half atomics, just word/double
<jrtc27> yeah, and it's very sad
<jrtc27> the encoding space is right there and adds ~no area overhead
<jrtc27> lr/sc are free, it's just the AMOs you pay for

<rory_be> Curiosity question... I have my VisionWave 2 board up and have built an optimized Gennto distribution...
<rory_be> It feels fast, and running a prime number benchmark it seems about as fast as a Pi4...
<rory_be> But the GeekBench results are stunningly low. Is this improper compiler optimizations?
<jrtc27> or your prime number benchmark can't easily be vectorised / has a low memory footprint / etc
<jrtc27> performance is more complicated than fast vs slow
<jrtc27> if a processor has acceleration for certain operations then the nature of your code is going to matter more
<jrtc27> or if the memory subsystem, be it cache hierarchies and sizes, or memory controller performance, or DRAM timings, notably differ in workloads that are memory-intensive then you'll notice it, but not if they don't need much memory

<rory_be> I should have been clearer... the system feels reasonably fast. Tasks like building GCC12 run at about the speed of a Pi4 and are huge (e.g. 1.2GB memory footprint). It is only GeekBench that seems slow - as in over 8 times slower than on a Pi4
<jrtc27> if geekbench stands out like a sore thumb then that is a strong indicator that something is wrong with your geekbench
<rory_be> So my curiosity is really about why the RISCV binary version of GeekBench runs so poorly.
<rory_be> Crossed response - Yes, I strongly suspect GeekBench - unfortunately it is a binary only distribution.
<Tenkawa> Geekbench is very GPU/graphics oriented
<Tenkawa> It has just really started in the RISC-V area
<Tenkawa> Its RISC-V version is still a preview that's version 5.5
<palmer> the SiFive cores have a bunch of performance issues, I wouldn't worry a ton about tracking down why a specific benchmack is slow
<Tenkawa> palmer: I haven't had any problems with the jh7110 so far on a mainline kernel and performance
<Tenkawa> The GPU however is a different matter and thats an Imagination Tech product from my understanding
