J25k26: So it sounds like the current update to the terms permits existing owners to stay on firmware that is open, but new printers will still be restricted?
<InPhase>
J25k26: That still leaves with the conclusion of don't buy their products.
<J25k26>
as i understood .. they took this out of the blog - but it is still in their TOS that not updating is not an option.. how ever current lan mode works without external connection (as far as i am aware)

InPhase: sorry if I am hugely off-topic here but my heart really goes out to all the decent Americans who see democracy being threatened now, it is really sad, I saw the pardon of those monsters who stormed the Capitol among other news and remembered when we were discussing it back then
<InPhase>
Yeah... Thanks. It is disturbing and alarming, and calls for ongoing vigilance from a society which is exhausted by the same.
<stealth_>
did bambu lab really try/did steal users files?
<teepee>
I have not heard anything about that, but they want to tunnel everything you print through their cloud
<teepee>
I don't think they need to steal anything there, people are uploading to makerworld anyway
<stealth_>
thats what i thought as well, since most ppl print locally through their network

ppl say a lot of stuff online, its hard to take it as fact. on ther other hand its true that anytime someone comes up with a product idea that makes $ its stolen and reproduced in no time.
<teepee>
yep, producing stuff and more critical to specs and regulation is a challenge
<stealth_>
if you create something and someone else steals it and makes $ on it, you are left broke and you wont continue your product anymore, and the ppl that stole it don't care either they will go on to steal next best things out there... you lost acutal custom losses as well they got a product they can't improve/fix.
<InPhase>
stealth_: Mandating that files one wishes to print go through a cloud service is a definite privacy violation.
<InPhase>
stealth_: So forcing that onto users is inappropriate business behavior.
<InPhase>
stealth_: Now it sounds like they are walking that back from forcing it retroactively on former customers into refusing to support any other mode going forward. Although that's only a little bit better. Maybe they will walk it back further.
<ali1234>
a lot of companies are doing this stuff just because everyone else is
<InPhase>
That "My product is the reason" link is insightful.
<InPhase>
Well, I'm just glad this went down before I got around to grabbing my next printer. I had been at least strongly considering bambu.
<stealth_>
well the printer itself is good and i would say less headache
<InPhase>
But this sort of thing is how you get me to not buy a thing. It's also how you get me to stop recommending a thing. They still have a time window yet to explain it was all a confused misstep and they commit to doing the right thing.
<stealth_>
today i even got a message saying its time to add more lube to y axes. before it noticed one of the belt was lose and told me how to fix it, easy...
<stealth_>
it does some kind of vibration check to find out flaws in hardware
<stealth_>
does prusa not have multi color print setup?
<stealth_>
o the prusa xl, looks like a really nice system.. though that price tag.. ouch.
