if you hold down the magnetic lock and flick the knife, it opens with the flick force
<InPhase>
I never had a leatherman that actually flicked. All of my leathermans are tight and fold up in two halves with a scissors or pliers in the middle.
<InPhase>
Those ones are spectacular though for having a lot of good quality tools around in compact form.

When I had a garage fire once, there was a brief window where the Leatherman Wave I had stored in my car was pretty close to every tool I had left. It became super handy until I restocked everything.

J2317: Regarding a flick to open as a gravity knife was a sketchy redefinition of words attempted by police and DAs in a few jurisdictions, but it seems to have not been holding up well in appeals courts.
<InPhase>
The addition of a thumb tab probably adds to the clarity that it is not, in fact, gravity doing the opening.
<InPhase>
And of course, not that any of that distinction makes any practical sense in terms of what a knife does. But most of those laws as written draw very silly lines regarding what is allegedly more dangerous.

you also can have utility knifes or cutter that can be operated with one hand - or rescue knifes .. and it for sure depends on state/county - just learned about the cutter that automatic retract the blade after each cut not just when your thumb leaves the blade.
<J2317>
i mean you will not get on a plane with any knife or scissor but germany is quite restrictive about knifes

i think in a gravity knife the blade slides straight outward with very little resistance. different from folding/rotating
<peepsalot>
its a translation motion only
<peepsalot>
hmm, maybe that's some more modern style i'm thinking of. I've only seen one in a youtube video. the pics in the wikipedia article look like they might be folding still
<peepsalot>
i guess the term is "telescoping"

"The gravity knife uses a button, trigger, or fulcrum lever to release the blade from both the open and the closed positions, and may use a side-folding or telescoping (out-the-front, or OTF) blade."
<J2317>
gravity may be replaced by any acceleration or centrifugal force
<guso78>
J2317, you could create an openscad animation to demstrate the motion :)
