kintel: remoting into Windows is common … just not using ssh. Usual is a remote desktop.
<JordanBrown[m]>
I’m not in front of my computer at the moment. I want to say the application is Remote Desktop Connection. Requires Windows Pro I think.

Right, by "remote" I meant ssh. I try to do most development in the same environment, so VS Code + terminal is working well (except this one issue, which I now think is a bug in OpenSCAD)
<kintel>
It's still curious though: How does Windows know that I'm executing stuff in a remote shell vs. a windowed shell?
<Scopeuk>
kintel I believe windows maintains information about where the session originates so rdp is seperate from local console and presumably separate from an ssh connection
<Scopeuk>
and I guess that will also make the distinction between shell is explorer.exe and shell is cmd.exe
<kintel>
Yeah, I wonder if there is smth. analogous to a DISPLAY env. variable
<Scopeuk>
as far as I am aware no, but I haven't tried to redirect a remote desktop application to local session.
<Scopeuk>
I am aware you get a fully different graphical stack under a remote desktop session to a local session depending upon locally available graphics devices/drivers, I guess under ssh that will be null
<guso78>
for ssh i know, that there is some background progresses running, which cache the password for some time and makes ssh working more smothly.
<guso78>
you start it with ssh-add
<guso78>
ussually you source the output of 'ssh-agent' which sets some variables
<guso78>
its unlikely that all these happens when you login via ssh
<Scopeuk>
it would be interesting to see what "query user" returns if run in an ssh session
<Scopeuk>
the machines I currently have up return either console (locally in use) or rdp-tcp#<<some number>> for remote desktop sessions

Yeah, you're onto something :)
<kintel>
However, it's the same session for ssh and rdp
<kintel>
Anway, I don't need GUI session access, I just need to talk to the GPU, but it might be protected by the same mechanism
<Scopeuk>
I think it is, effectively the gpu driver isn't loaded unless you are locally connected, mesa might be able to bridge it for you https://github.com/pal1000/mesa-dist-win has been good to me for that, not sure if it can jump that gap to get the gpu up

guso78: I think it might be the RDC host that requires Pro. I don't know - I use RDC routinely, but the host is a VirtualBox virtual console, which is completely different from the Windows host.
