Remember that pretty much $fs controls small circles and $fa controls big circles. $fa=1 yields a maximum of 360 sides, even if your $fs is small. I don't remember the exact numbers, but even for a fairly large circle I couldn't feel or see the corners at something like $fa=2. At $fa=5, which yields 72gons, a large circle had easily perceived sides.

I consider $fa=2 "very round" and $fa=1 "mechanically smooth". I often drop to $fa=2 or 180 per loop when I need to wind down facet count, unless something will be sliding along another mechanical part.

there are a lot situations where you want $fn .. like using an rotate extrude with a cylinder in the center - it is impossible with $fs to get matching fragments as the size is different and rotate_extrude will calculate by the biggest diameter
