<teepee>
oh my people missing the gsoc deadline again :(
<teepee>
sad, but I guess also a learning experience
<joseph_>
The deadline was about an hour ago, right?
<teepee>
yep
<joseph_>
Do you know how many people applied this year?
<teepee>
no, they usually release the numbers at some point on their blog
<teepee>
but IIRC that's much later, when they got a bit more time, it's just a couple of people running this, which is crazy with usually 4 digit students
<joseph_>
It might be even more for 2022 because Google removed the students-only restriction
<teepee>
"For the 2021 program, these 1,286 students joined from 69 countries across the globe"
<teepee>
crazy_imp: cool, let me put that into a github issue, unless you want to have the honors of owning it :D
<myosotis>
out of 1300, how many will produce production ready results by the end?
<crazy_imp>
teepee: it's fine, so nobody will blame me if it breaks something else ;)
<joseph_>
If the accepted GSoC contributors uniformly spread out across projects, that's about 6 per organization. Which would meet the OpenCAx goal of having one contributor per sub-project
<teepee>
they did ask in the evaluation though, well including expectation like "to be merged in next 3 month" or so
<myosotis>
yeah I was just curious how successful the program is. idk how it's really structured or what the expectations are
<teepee>
the official main goal is to bring people into open source projects, not primarily to maximize code use. but I guess it's still related
<teepee>
joseph_: there was some general discussion / feeling of applications being down in numbers but it's always hard to tell
<joseph_>
teepee: Historically has OpenSCAD specifically gotten a lot of applications?
<teepee>
no, we are both not very visible and C++ is not the thing everyone jumps to :)
<teepee>
I guess over the years it's something between 0 and 5
<teepee>
on the plus side, I'd say the past results were quite good. there's a couple of things not fully released, one bigger change just made it this year after sitting maybe 5 years :)
<teepee>
but most things are actually release which is nice
<myosotis>
so from your experience, having GSoC participants has been a positive in general?
<teepee>
yes
<teepee>
it would be great to do Google Season of Docs again, but I guess that ship has sailed for this year

teepee: can openscad be split into multiple windows? maybe that's the reason why the `activeOnly` exists?
<teepee>
yes, you can have multiple windows
<teepee>
the active might be for the preferences window, not sure
<teepee>
as that needs to grab the events too for calibration

teepee: the preferences window still works as expected (while active, no input to the main window) with the patch

crazy_imp: hmm, so it's some other reason that flag exists
