manish7294: the LMNN paper is a good place to start, then become familiar with SDPs and the Burer-Monteiro papers on low-rank SDPs

it's worth pointing out, that project has sat for a while without having anyone jump on it, so I expect it to be somewhat difficult

it may also be possible to "combine" it with the 'algorithm improvement' project, so that at the end of the summer the LMNN implementation you produce is demonstrably faster than other implementations
