<piggz> hi, ive a question about you pinephone port ... why is the alsa UCM config _so_ different from upstream? is there some thought/documentation about it and the settings?
<inky> hello, piggz. i am not from maemo team. i packaged amazfish and you helped me. thank you for your great work on many projects.
<Wizzup> piggz: good question, I think we got this from rafael2k (one of the guys who worked on it), what is the upstream version so that I can compare?

<piggz> and the files in there
<sicelo> piggz: i think it's what was there at the time. the PP ucm config keeps changing
<piggz> i asl because one of my users claims mamo has better sound quality that sailfish, so i wonder if there is something fundamentally different
<sicelo> and yes, iirc even pmOS (who have the highest number of pinephone users,, i guess) doesn't use the upstream ucm, although i believe they're trying to reduce the diff
<sicelo> ah interesting @ good sounds

<donc> Hey guys, having started anew trying to dial-out using Leste on the Pinephone I wanted to share my current status. Having discovered ofono scripts I had high hopes of finding the answer but no. I think the apn name is the issue for no data and the command to set it requires the PATH variable. When I use the modem system PATH retreived using an info script I get an error stating the PATH contains an illegal character "."

<Wizzup> donc: what issue are you trying to solve in particular?
<donc> I'm using blueman for my keyboard, network-manager for ethernet on the usb docking station. Both work pretty well. Yes the issue is not being able to dial out even when registered with the provider.
<donc> sms was working and incoming calls too
arno11 has joined #maemo-leste
pere has joined #maemo-leste
<donc> But I finally got dial out to work by installing another call app
<donc> gnome-call I thing, lemme check
<inky> i think yesterday i tested and found out that when there are several wifi access points with same ssid, and you move aroend, maemo reconnecms to the closest one.
<inky> reconnects*
<Wizzup> donc: is network manager taking over what icd2 is supposed to do?
<Wizzup> We don't normally run network manager
<sicelo> inky: isn't that behavior expected?
<Wizzup> what is 'dial out', making a phone call?
<donc> yeah, gnome-caller let's me dial out successfully but what's interesting is I have to enter the user password and the message "System policy prevents voice calls"
<donc> yes making a call rather than incoming
<Wizzup> and you can't use sphone?
<Wizzup> I didn't even know we have gnome-caller...
<donc> I couldn't get ethernet to work reliably without network manager
<inky> > inky: isn't that behavior expected?
<inky> i didnt know how maemo would behave. sxmo didn't reconnect.
<donc> sphone failed consistently
<sicelo> you have a broken system ... gnome-calls will install ModemManager, which cannot co-manage the modem with ofono (which we use under Leste)
<donc> whatever the case, I can make calls. So far so good
<Wizzup> donc: how did sphone fail?
piggz has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<Wizzup> the solution here is to fix whatever is going wrong in sphone
<donc> when I enter the number and hit call, it starts a call then ends in a couple seconds
<donc> Finding the solution is the problem I've had. I was posting here in may trying to resolve the no call problem
<freemangordon> donc: did you try *before* installing the whole MM stack?
<Wizzup> donc: are you on -devel?
<freemangordon> Wizzup: we shall move things to -stable
<freemangordon> or at least start moving
<donc> I only installed MM gui because is says it supports ofono but not my version I think because ofono is greyed out
<donc> no not dev. I tried dev but nothing worked
piggz has joined #maemo-leste
<Wizzup> I don't know how MM can support ofono, they conflict
<freemangordon> they don't
<Wizzup> donc: interesting, I am on dev now on the pp and can make calls
<donc> I installed dev and did an apt upgrade with installed 900+ packages and it sucked at anything I tried. I suppose it was the wrong move
<donc> I have a subordinate provider to ATT
<sicelo> donc: to use ofono, you need to kill gnome-calls, then run it with 'gnome-calls -p ofono'
<donc> I know PP works with ATT but I don't want ATT because the required access to my checking acct when I tried to sign up
<sicelo> but yes, let's rather get you to fix sphone. gnome-calls' ofono backend is not well maintained
<donc> command line "gnome-calls -p ofono" to make calls or is that config
<donc> ?
<sicelo> yes, and you would need to stop ModemManager first
<donc> my providers aren't on the provider list within the system
<sicelo> i wonder if issue is not volte perhaps
<Wizzup> for the record leste won't use modemmanager for a long time to come, so if you want a leste system to use it's best to go back to stock image and help us debug what is not working for you
<donc> When I used the scripts for testing basic settings, some failed
<Wizzup> if you can get more specific than 'some failed' we can try to solve it
<donc> I'll back up my partition and put back the clean one and get back with you guys if you have the time
<donc> I need to look up the scripts. I'll redo the scene. Gimme a few
<Wizzup> the test would be, flash latest stable image, try to call, repor whta happens

<donc> okie dokie, flashed image dated 08-21-24, booted, expanded partition, entered my voicemail number, it proceded to the dialing screen for 5 seconds before returning to the dial pad. No messages or errors shown. I've this 50 times while tweaking this setting for config file or that one.
<donc> no ethernet by default
<Wizzup> yes, no ethernet by default is expected
<Wizzup> can you upgrade to -devel and try the same?
<Wizzup> this means adding the -devel line in addition to the regular line
<donc> then apt upgrade?
<Wizzup> apt update and then apt upgrade

arno11 has left #maemo-leste [#maemo-leste]
<Wizzup> donc: I think some documentation would help you here, also the fact that the old sphone sms launcher is still available is not helpful
<Wizzup> so you would need to use conversations to send/receive smses now, which will give you a better experience overall, but there is one catch: you can only start an initial sms with a contact, so make a contact for your mom, go to her contact card, click sms, and you'll get a window to send her a sms
<Wizzup> the sphone sms stuff is deprecated and won't work
