Using fitImage permits not having to deal with dtb file anymore since it’s included, same for ramdisk. And this permits generating the extlinux file from wic and use the boot partition uuid instead of fixed boot device name

I can't find a place where extlinux.conf is generated...

narmstrong: I see, previously I had custom package that contained copy of extlinux.conf and updated the one in /boot/extlinux/ (leaving just kernel root parameter untouched). I will tweak it a bit more. I need to have this file in rootfs partition too
