<twnqx> hi everyone! i just installed libreelec 11.0.3 Generic PC on a laptop, and connected a tv to HDMI. i don't have a monitor selection option in kodi, as shown at https://kodi.wiki/view/Settings/System/Display.
<twnqx> do i need the legacy image to get this, or is this possibly a hardware issue?

<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> twnqx: that feature only exists on Windows/macOS or possibly ‘desktop’ Linux distros that support multiple active display outputs
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> it doesn’t exist on LE, hence it’s not exposed in the GUI (we hide it since it doesn’t work)
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> over SSH run “tail /sys/class/drm/*/status” and note the ‘connected’ drm device
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> this is probably LVDS-1 or something similar for the internal laptop screen
<f_> probably eDP-1 for newer laptops
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> if yes, edit /flash/syslinux.cfg and append “video=LVDS-1:d” to boot params (add to the same line, do not put on a new line)
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> the ‘d’ disables the drm device so Kodi will find and use the HDMI device (normally HDMI-A-1) instead
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> if f_ is correct and it’s eDP-1 .. disable that instead
<f_> It's eDP-1 on my laptop at least.
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> do “mount -o remount,rw /flash” to make the boot partition editable first
<f_> and on most newer laptops I dealt with
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> (as we mount read-only by default)
<twnqx> right
<twnqx> no worries, linux is my daily driver for quite some time
<twnqx> i just wasn't sure if it's a wayland issue
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> unlikely to be since we don’t use wayland
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> (the legacy image uses Xorg, but then you’re left with an unclean feeling)
<twnqx> so... if not wayland, and not xorg... what is it using? i wasn't aware of a third option
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> GBM/V4L2
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> in old-speak it would be called “running on the framebuffer”
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> although that’s technically incorrect .. but we render directly to a DRM buffer object
<twnqx> that's... interesting, i guess kernel mode setting and the DRM interface makes it easier
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> LE always runs “fullscreen” so there’s no need for a windowing system
<twnqx> though you lose dynamic output selection :P
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> some number higher than 99% of our users have devices with a single HDMI output so that’s not really an issue
<twnqx> i suppose
<twnqx> my normal libreelec box also only has hdmi connected
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> the project targets HTPC boxes and SBC boards .. we can also be used to recycle old laptops but they have never been a hardware target
<twnqx> at least it gives me a reason not to buy the origin ae HTPC chassis with large embedded TFT as second screen ;)
<twnqx> but while i'm here: is DoVi support in the 11.0.4, or do i have to switch to nightly?
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> the first step is finding a keyboard
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> the second step is authoring DV support for Linux
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> or you wait for someone else to do it

<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> the factually correct answer by @noggin is a couple of posts later
<twnqx> yeah. mpv does it with new enough libplacebo
<twnqx> too bad i have enough hobby projects :)
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> technically mpv doesn’t support DV either .. it just does unmangles the colours to a user acceptable level
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> (bad english day..)
<twnqx> technically libplacebo does, not even mpv itself :)
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> the only way to properly support DV is paying license fees to Dolby which then limit your implementation to specific licensed devices
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> the licensing angle guarantees nobody in the $free end of the Linux ecosystem supports DV properly
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> once you start working with ARM SoC vendor kernels (which are hacked to support DV) .. then you get true support
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> the kernels are almost all targeting Android
<twnqx> hm. but noone ever went after reverse engineered EAC, DTS, DTS-HD, etc support.
<twnqx> i suppose it's more a 1question of time
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> if you’re volunteering to stick your neck over the castle wall to see if Dolby throws anything at you .. be our guest 🙂
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> i’m aware of them pursuing people who resell hardware devices that included Dolby support (not DV, but other things) without licensing it
<twnqx> done something like that in libav/ffmpeg before, when i was eannoyed enough that nothing could play multichannel PCM blurays
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> (not a rumour .. first-hand contact to the person receiving the threatening letters)
<twnqx> how nice of them...
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> anyway.. it’s gone midnight here
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> time to eat half a carrot and a mince pie before kids wake up, and Zzz
<twnqx> do i put the full "video=card0-eDP-1:d" into the conf, or just eDP-1?
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> card0 can be omited
<twnqx> ok, thank you, enjoy your midnight snack, and sleep well :)
<LEBot> [slack] <chewitt> good luck
