<bkeys>
Are USB devices really unstable for anyone else on the unmatched?
<bkeys>
USB webcam, sound card, keyboard; I keep having to unplug and replug them in to work
<rwmjones>
FWIW I have not yet tried USB devices, but you might want to ask davidlt if there are known issues here; also which kernel are you using?
<bkeys>
I also noticed it says "usb 2-2-port3: Cannot enable, Maybe the USB cable is bad?"
<bkeys>
Which my keyboard is not even a week old
<bkeys>
Let me get the kernel name
<bkeys>
It prints the line about bad cables like, 5+ times I suppose one for each USB device
<bkeys>
rwmjones: 5.11.0-1012-generic
<bkeys>
davidlt:
<davidlt>
bkeys, there are some reports on disconnects/reconnects
<davidlt>
bkeys, did you try different distros, e.g. FUSDK, Ubuntu?
* bkeys
reconnects his keyboard
<bkeys>
davidlt: I have not, I am currently using the Ubuntu image
<bkeys>
I have never used the freedomsdk, is it supposed to be a full distro?
<davidlt>
ah, so this is happening with Ubuntu image
<davidlt>
it's not, it's a demo image build with OE
<bkeys>
Yeah I want to use this board as my desktop
<bkeys>
So I want KDE and a package manager
<bkeys>
I'd like Fedora, but I gotta get around to getting the uboot on the SPI
<davidlt>
it's quite under-powered to be used for a desktop replacement :)
<bkeys>
That it is, but I am fine with it
<bkeys>
I am not doing anything that heavy
<davidlt>
in that case it's good enough :)
<bkeys>
So has anyone come up with a solution for the USB connection issues?
<davidlt>
try top left port, that's not connected via USB Hub
<davidlt>
(top left if the board is sitting on the table)
<davidlt>
3 ports go via USB HUB chip, one via USB Bridge
<bkeys>
I did notice that my trackball never dies
<davidlt>
yeah, get a USB hub and try that particular port
<davidlt>
if everyone is OK could you report on SiFive Forums?
<bkeys>
I don't have an account on there
<bkeys>
Now, do you consider the ethernet port on the right or left of the board?
<davidlt>
right
<bkeys>
Hmm, so my trackball is on the right then
<bkeys>
And you are saying to try the top left
<davidlt>
so the USB port next to the Ethernet connected, the top one (highest one) is that USB Bridge
<bkeys>
My trackball never dies
<bkeys>
Yep my trackball is plugged in on top, closest to ethernet port
<bkeys>
I will use that port
<davidlt>
yeah, try to move all the devices to that port by using USB hub
<davidlt>
or/and try each device individually (e.g keyboard)
<bkeys>
Alright, thanks. I am glad to know that it is not just me
<davidlt>
I personally almost never have this issue, but some seems have it
<davidlt>
bkeys, but you should try FUSDK too. I don't think Ubuntu pulled the latest patches.
<bkeys>
I am fine with the power this thing has; but if they came out with a new riscv board that had more power I would buy it
<bkeys>
And I imagine that they well
<bkeys>
Just the kernel from FUSDK? Cause if it just a proof of concept image I'd rather not
<bkeys>
I mean if I can get a
<bkeys>
functional desktop out of it I am willing; cause I hate using ubuntu
<davidlt>
I has Xfce
<davidlt>
Just to test, not for general usage
<bkeys>
Can I build C/Cpluplus on it?
<davidlt>
Yes
<davidlt>
Also GCC and Clang are included
<bkeys>
Can I get KDE?
<bkeys>
or at least lxqt?
<davidlt>
Depends if such recipes/layers exist and you are willing to compile your own disk images
<bkeys>
Ehh, I got it all going through the same port now, hopefully it stops dying
<bkeys>
If I can have USB devices work on here I think I will just stick with ubuntu until I can get Fedora on here
<bkeys>
Right now I got this theory that if I can get the unmatched to boot from the SPI, then I should be able to boot the Fedora-Rawhide image I have for riscv
<davidlt>
I am slowly working on Fedora/RISCV Unmatched support, but never finish it :/
<bkeys>
If there is anything I can to do help...
<davidlt>
The SPI NOR Flash is currently not support on Unmatched within U-Boot SPL
<davidlt>
It's not part of FUSDK and it's not in upstream
<bkeys>
Hmm, so my theory is futile then
<bkeys>
At least until all of that stuff gets upstreamed
<bkeys>
Gosh, I am okay with the speed this thing moves at but I can't use this thing as a workstation
<bkeys>
It's too dang buggy, even after I move it all to that 1 USB port it still is really unstable
<bkeys>
And the performance would be a lot better if they actually used the full M.2 drive
<bkeys>
I understand it's new and all that so I gotta be patient
* BryceII
looks around for some randome USB device to shoive in (other than mouse/keyboard which I'm already using elsewhere
