Hey guys, nvidia-settings seems to missing at least two dependencies: libvdpau and jansson

i see smearing stripes in firefox-bin, does anyone else know about this? likely kernel, maybe, not freetype what i thought. hm.
<stenur>
btw i also saw the youtube-dl download throttling, while i see hardcore NetBSD people talking about successful switch to yt-dlp

elderK: with this i915, in the past, after first startup in X, there was a short single flush, today i had multiple thereof. Maybe kernel. Though nothing to be seen in between 5.10.76 and .78 regarding this directly. As still the broken "setterm blank setting forgotten" is open .. i only hope my laptop keeps on going
<elderK>
Do you guys ever get packaging fatigue?
<elderK>
I want to build a port. But then I realize how many damned dependencies the port has. And I start, but quickly get tired.
<elderK>
I have learned to be minimalistic: I only go through the port process if I really, really, really need something.
<elderK>
This isn't a slight on Crux, though. You realize the cost of things much more when you are the one that has to build or package something.
<GazL>
elderK: I'm pretty much used to building my own packages from 25 odd years+ with Slackware, so CRUX doesn't phase me.
<elderK>
I'm used to building packages, too, it's just man, some stuff has so many dependencies. It would take days to build all the necessary ports.
<GazL>
... though my minimal tendencies also help keep the workload down.
<GazL>
Yep. I can appreaciate that. Thankfully for me, there's not that much stuff like that I need.
<elderK>
I've been trying to build some source ports for games. Most are pretty minimal but some are insane.
<elderK>
It just makes me think, meh. Reboot into Windows. I don't really care THAT much if the game is run on Linux. It'd be nice but meh.
<elderK>
Some dependencies, too, you're not sure if all functionality is required. Say openscenegraph. It requires a LOT of stuff. And the optional dependencies it has, require lots of stuff. So you're like, hey, do I really NEED to build in that optional stuff. But you don't know. Not unless you are very familiar with the game's source itsllef.

<elderK>
I guess the answer there is to build everything minimal, no optionals, and try the game. If it fails, loop back and start adding stuff that it requires.

I'm not much of a gamer these days. Kind of burnt myself out on MMO's like Ultima Online, Everquest and WoW.
<elderK>
Fair enough :) UO was great.
<GazL>
Kor Por! ;)
<elderK>
Sometimes I wonder how hard it would be to set up a private server of sorts so my girlfriend and I could play UO.
<GazL>
I played it in the very early days, before moving to Everquest. I didn't really keep in touch with how it developed over the years.

<pedja>
talk about applications with vast number of deps :)
<pedja>
I think I wrote about 1000+ ports in 10+ years I've used CRUX
<pedja>
in 3+ years I've been using openSUSE Leap, I wrote maybe 5 spec files :)
<elderK>
Iono. I don't have the time I used to, to spend writing ports. But I refuse to leave Crux behind because I love it :)
Belgacem1958 has joined #crux
<elderK>
Like, there are so many things I need to learn about making ports. Like, finding out all the dependencies. There has to be a better way than reading the makefiles and stuff.
<elderK>
I could spin up a chroot or an image for each port I make, but then I'd spend a lot of time rebuilding deps and stuff each time I created a new port.
<GazL>
The way I approach it is just to run ./configure and see what it complains about...
<GazL>
Then afterwards I just readelf -d |grep needed on all the executables it creates to see what it links against.

Aye, me too.
<elderK>
Python stuff annoys me because I find it hard to find their deps.
