<ukleinek> broonie: existing, again with spi-mux
<ukleinek> broonie: io_mutex is taken in a nested way in spi_setup -> spi_mux_setup -> spi_setup
<ukleinek> broonie: my best idea last night was to move mutex_init from spi_register_controller() to spi_alloc_master() to give spi_mux_probe() a chance to use lockdep_set_subclass()
<ukleinek> not sure that is how the cool kids do that today though.

<tlwoerner> after adding 1 regulator to the gpu, i seem to end up with 2 regulators (the 2nd of which seems bogus)
<Xogium> well I take my chance around here… Did anyone here use the stm32mp1 based board and noticed some issue with tye usb ?
<broonie> tlwoerner: You can have two consumer drivers request the same regulator, we don't prevent that (eg, some powerdomain thing and the device specific driver).
<Xogium> if I plug my usb key while it is booting up, it is detected and I can insert and remove as much as I want in the time the board runs
<Xogium> but plugging my usb wifi dongle for example will show nothing, no matter how many times I try to insert it, that is dmesg stays silent and doesn't even announce the new usb device
<Xogium> if I plug that instead at cold boot, the only thing it will want to recognize is my wifi dongle
<Xogium> if I plug nothing at all before it boots, then it recognizes nothing
<tlwoerner> broonie: okay thanks, it looked fishy :-)
cdaudt has joined #armlinux
<ukleinek> Xogium: the usual thing to try with USB problems is to use a powered hub.
<Xogium> ukleinek: sure but how do you explain that hotplugging seemgly doesn't work, when coldplug before boot sort of works
<broonie> Xogium: More other things being active later on and leaving less power available for plugged devices?
Tokamak has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<Xogium> broonie: could be… But then, why can I unplug my device, whatever I used, then plug it back in just fine, but not plug anything else ?
<Xogium> that's what's confusing me
<Xogium> that is if I unplug and switch to some other device like usb pendrive, it will not even try to recognize it

<Xogium> hmm I found my issue
<Xogium> if you plug in strictly high-speed devices in those ports, no problem
<Xogium> as soon as you plug something that requires full-speed, the stack barfs all over the place and it makes the whole usb subsystem unusable, until you unload ehci_platform, and reload it again
<headless> Xogium: spectacular :-)
<Xogium> I'm not quite sure why that would be, though
<Xogium> I know those ports are configured for hs mode, but surely, something in fs should simply not be detected… Not make the kernel blow up chunks ?
<Xogium> or is this a hardware problem ?
sudeepholla has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]

<Xogium> I mean… I suppose it could make the usb phy crash, that would explain why you got to reload the ehci_platform module

<headless> Xogium: fast/low speed is handled by a companion controller, most often ohci
<Xogium> hmm right
<Xogium> this board has specific usb configuration limitation, as per the manual. Or well SoC, rather
<Xogium> 2 × USB 2.0 high-speed Host+ 1 × USB 2.0 full-speed OTG simultaneously.or 1 × USB 2.0 high-speed Host+ 1 × USB 2.0 high-speed OTG simultaneously.
<Xogium> I've made the 2 type a ports be hs, and the usb c port be fs
<Xogium> but… connecting something to the hs ports shouldn't make this explode should it ?
<headless> Xogium: what's your OTG controller?
<headless> Xogium: sgouldn't
<Xogium> I guess what I'm trying to find out in this case is, is it the kernel doing wrong, or the hardware itself at fault ?
<headless> *sh
<ukleinek> Xogium: I guess it has something to do with overcurrent and wrong acking
<Xogium> hmm let me check again
<Xogium> apparently they are integrated in the SoC… Both host and otg
<Xogium> at least, the good thing with st is… There's PLENTY of documentation

<Xogium> I reckon much of that info is in diagram form also, which doesn't help my case
<ukleinek> Xogium: it might be worthwile to check the OC pin and if you have the 5V vbus
<Xogium> hmm… Vbus appears to work ok, I can charge my phone from it. But about the OC pin, do you mean overcurrent ?
<ukleinek> yes, overcurrent
<Xogium> this is a really weird issue
<Xogium> having the usb ports that are set to be in hs mode crashing completely as soon as I plug something that is fs… First time I run into that one
<Xogium> can that be OC related ?
Tokamak has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<ukleinek> Xogium: if there is an OC event that isn't properly acked/reset, the port stops working.
<Xogium> interesting
<ukleinek> but I admit I didn't try to explain all the details you wrote with OC, that's just my general expertise that nearly all USB problems are related to OC.
<Xogium> but yeah, better safe than sorry, I'd think
Tokamak has joined #armlinux
<ukleinek> and checking that is cheap (if you have a schematic and can read it)
<Xogium> I can't read it, but at least I have one
<Xogium> or… I think I do
<Xogium> it's all png
<ukleinek> how unusual
* ukleinek found a PDF
<Xogium> ah… then maybe it was not a schematic
ardb has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
* ukleinek isn't a hw pro, but the OC stuff on that board looks strange
<Xogium> how so ?
<ukleinek> Xogium: I misinterpreted that, it looks OK, didn't notice the OC output goes to the SOM
<Xogium> ah, oof. Scared me for a sec there
* ukleinek doesn't find a schematic for the SoM
<ukleinek> Xogium: USB1_OC is also called GPIO_PF3 and USB2_OC is GPIO_PF12. You might want to check if these pins are used as oc sense
<Xogium> good idea
* headless remembers his troubles with OC
<Xogium> let me check the dt
<ukleinek> Xogium: I assume you're on some recent vanilla kernel? (Compared to that strange guy in #kernelnewbies asking for help on a patched 3.11.x kernel.)
<Xogium> lol yeah
<Xogium> 5.14.10 actually
* ukleinek doesn't find pinmuxing related to the usb stuff
<Xogium> me neither
<Xogium> this is well, certainly quite disturbing
<Xogium> it is recent hw and not much has been ported to mainline
<Xogium> ukleinek: just to be sure here… Suppose those OC pins are not defined in the dt, do they still work, stricly speaking hardware ? That is, can the protection for OC still kick in should it need to happen, and I don't risk damaging the hardware ?
<Xogium> hrm I think I might have figured out why it decided to barf up that way at least… There was &usb_ehci in the dt patch, but nowhere did it mention &usb_ohci
cdaudt has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<ukleinek> Xogium: not knowing the hardware, so I cannot say. Maybe the bootloader setup the right pinmuxing? I wouldn't expect that the hardware will be damaged.
