<agl> I have Armbian 24.11.2 on a Raspberry Pi 5. Since the last upgrades, the graphical login screen only appears for 4 seconds after a restart and then the screen is black and only the flashing cursor of a virtual console is visible. I can switch to the first text console with Ctrl-Alt-F1, but the graphical login (Ctrl-Alt-F7) is gone. My /var/log/Xorg.0.log can be viewed at https://paste.debian.net/hidden/51af8670/.

<agl> Werner: I mean it's not a Problem of the rpi, i mean ist a problem of the X11/Xorg-Server.
<agl> especially the Load/Unload of Modules of the Xorg-Server.

<katoomba> Good morning folks. I need to manually configure network settings using a script. IP/mask/GW/DNS. In Armbian, which files/where should I be doing that?
<katoomba> OK, so this is interesting. I am intending to be the maintainer of the BananaPi M2 Zero. I am even listed on the website as the maintainer (which is nice). However, the images on that page (I believe) are generic. https://www.armbian.com/bananapi-m2-zero/ The desktop image is Ubuntu. I assume your response is based upon Ubuntu, which makes sense. However, the Minimal image is Debian. I am not using that image. So I will certainly try the netplan
<katoomba> solution. But, what would I use with Debian? Because I think debian uses ifupdown - right?

<katoomba> And if I get to the point where I am actually testing images for the BPi M2 Zero, do I have to test both images? Or, can the page show just one image?
<katoomba> What's the general approach to maintaining multiple or a single image/s?

<DC-IRC> [Discord] <igorpec> Katoomba: can answer on this ATM, later, perhaps someone else covers.
<katoomba> No rush. I am just gearing up to be more involved and I need a little direction on some things like this.
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <menu> is it not still `minimal=systemd-networkd`, `desktop=networkmanager`? i run ifupdown2 😅
<katoomba> I really don't know. That's why I was asking.
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <menu> i *believe* that's the case, but can't verify
<katoomba> Ubuntu 16.04 was ifupdown. Ubuntu 18.04 and above is systemd-networkd + netplan.
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <menu> the default netplans *should* make that clear though
<katoomba> Now that I know a bit more about different network management packages, I can agree with you.
<katoomba> Up until a few hours ago, I basically had no idea.
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <menu> switching to ifupdown2 was *fun*
<katoomba> anything I should worry about?
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <menu> avoid `ifupdown` and `ifupdown2` unless you absolutely *need* them

<katoomba> What's wrong with ifupdown?
<katoomba> The BPi M2 Zero page does not show the server image. Pages for other hardware do. Why? How do I get that fixed?
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <menu> ifupdown is deprecated, ifupdown2 replaces it but isn't as widely supported as systemd-networkd/networkmanager, and it can have some rather odd behaviours
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <Github> ✅ **Merged** into [armbian/build](<https://github.com/armbian/build>) by [igorpecovnik](<https://github.com/igorpecovnik>) - [Link](<https://github.com/armbian/build/commit/2be9ed91f51083877a37a90e9c89d36209f6b5c6>): *UEFI-arm64: disable broken Phytium network driver patch*
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <c0rnelius77> I use ifupdown on all my personal builds. I know on Jammy systemd-resolved broke static ips, but that was fixable with some adjustments.
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <menu> original or 2?
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <c0rnelius77> original
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <c0rnelius77> network-manager I find works well on a device ur going to be moving around on such as a laptop or something. But if the device is in a static location I see no reason to use it. Bloat for nothing.
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <c0rnelius77> and netplan is kind of like a nightmare in my opinion.

<katoomba> I use Armbian for an appliance. I have a web page for setting network up. I remove network manager. And use scripts to configure network. Including dnsmasq for DHCP. hostapd for Access Point. wpa_supplicant. etc etc
<katoomba> It's always been a huge pain. Every flavor is different. And people keep changing packages.
<katoomba> I ended up freezing my appliance on a version from 2020. And have left it there ever since. But now, I have customers begging for an update. So here I am. Redoing my whole web backend script. Hopefully, netplan will do the job It looks promising.
<katoomba> "People" as in LINUX flavors. Not Armbian people.
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <Werner> The change to netplan and the underlaying stuff happened fairly recently. I hope it stays like that for a decade or so, so I have time to get used to it 😄
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <menu> i absolutely *despise* netplan, but it's a necessary evil for at least *some* cases

<DC-IRC> [Discord] <igorpec> katoomba: you should play a bit with (refactored) armbian-config. Not everything is in perfect state, but its a huge improvement in handling all this
<DC-IRC> [Discord] <igorpec> well, changes always brings something good and bad 😉
<katoomba> There's some wisdom right there. :-)
