[Discord] <petingoso> Hmm I just had a thought
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <petingoso> Armbian has an auto update for apt every day right? Would that long term be bad for NAND? I tried to remove all issues that could do that and I think I'm only missing that (logging and frequent written files are on an external, replaceable SD card)

[Discord] <mecoblock> The new download page is a big improvement! I think one little change is missing. Instead of calling it "Armbian Linux 6.1" it should be "Armbian-Rockchip 6.1" and the "Edge" should be "Upstream Edge". Any image where there isn’t a "custom" kernel on the armbian repo shouldn’t be called "Armbian Linux". If it’s a vendor kernel it should be "Vendor Linux"

[Discord] <igorpec> "vendor linux" is heavily modified too. Ain't vendor anymore 😉 So its hard to decide what is right, but yes that information has to be added. There will be more changes to the download pages shortly.

[Discord] <rpardini> x13s definitely needs the DTB. We've `grub-with-dtb` extension for that purpose
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <mecoblock> Patches are a blessing, I just think as an enduser it would be great to know where the "base" comes from.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <efectn> i think we can add short description to show diff between kernel versions per family
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> yes, agree, that part we need to add somehow

[Discord] <narga_64> Maybe we could also think about the internal naming scheme `legacy`, `current` and `edge` so the name better reflects the use case?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <narga_64> When I first joined Armbian, it took me quite a while to understand that `legacy` was a vendor kernel and is veeerry different than the `edge` kernel 😂
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <narga_64> I think the `vendor` naming like it is for rk3588 is quite nice since you know directly from the name what it is. `current` could maybe be renamed to `lts` or something like that to reflect that this is (in 95% of cases) an LTS kernel and will keep receiving security updates? 🤔
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <narga_64> Just an opinion though. The names are probably standing for many many years now and probably some people would be annoyed by a change 😅

[Discord] <rpardini> We have a few cases that are out of standard:
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <rpardini> - `xu4`'s `current` kernel is actually a vendor kernel
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <rpardini> - most `legacy` kernels are actually vendor kernels
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <rpardini> - I pushed for 3588's 6.1 to be named `vendor`
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <rpardini> - changes to LINUXFAMILY cause changes to package names which are absolutely non-trivial upgrade-path-wise (welcome anyone that understands the pipelines to publish packages & Igor's aptly stuff)

[Discord] <rpardini> - `rk35xx` family and `rockchip-rk3588` BOARDFAMILY are mostly the same LINUXFAMILY but defined separately
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <rpardini> - `rockchip64` has no `legacy` nor `vendor` and adding it makes the above worse

Howdy. I need to upgrade the kernels on a fair-sized number of deployed machines and would rather not manually hit each one. Can someone tell me what the command line for automating armbian-config to update kernel to 6.1 please?
* TheSHADOW
found some info on that
<TheSHADOW>
Okay, got to automate it up to the confirmation, now I have to get it past that, and I'm wading through the code looking to see if I can figure out how to get past that point... :-P
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lex05> hi/hello.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lex05> What is te cheap & cli-compatible device working linux?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lex05> I'm doing some stuff on unsopported TV-Box, but it not seems good...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <lex05> If anyone knows other supported (community) device for atleast 25$, i will very greatful
<TheSHADOW>
How cheap is the question.
<TheSHADOW>
Potato is cheap... Raspberry Pi Zero is even cheaper. How fast, how many features do you need?
LanDi has joined #armbian
<TheSHADOW>
Le Potato is only $30 on Amazon right now. I don't recall if Armbian supports it.
<TheSHADOW>
Looks like it does.

[Discord] <Werner> stay away from tvboxes. any board listed on downloads is better than the "best" tvbox out there.

[Discord] <narga_64> Honestly I personally loooove the `vendor` name.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <narga_64> But yeah I know this, sometimes design choices are regretted later because their impact wasn't forseen 😅
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <narga_64> Also to this day I don't fully understand the difference between LINUXFAMILY and BOARDFAMILY. I only know that one of them defined which family config file is loaded
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <narga_64> Maybe we should put a description in the docs 😅
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <narga_64> To fix the upgrade path, maybe the "last" kernel package can change the package name when someone updates it? I know there is a way to change e.g. from current to edge in some config file. Maybe this way we could also change the "future" package names?

[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Also, a funny similar problem: sun50iw9 is a sunlong kernel. But sun50iw9-bpi is a mainline.

[Discord] <narga_64> Some of this naming is insane 😆

[Discord] <narga_64> It's very old, uses lots of power compared to a recent SBC, has a big case compared to an SBC and is probably not quiet (passively cooled).
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <narga_64> If you don't mind that, then it's good. It also has better compatibility since it's x86.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <narga_64> But for under 50$ you can already get an older raspberry pi or some of the chinese SBCs that do not have the problems mentioned above, but will have lacking compatibility compared to x86 (if it's well supported e.g. by Armbian, you won't really notice though)
