[Discord] <Werner> Depends on what you want to achieve. For stuff you plan to provide a pr so it gets part of the build framework you have to fork it.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> For everything else and customization you can do almost everything from userpatches directory. So simple cloning to local is sufficient to play

it seems like any compilation of C/C++ software needs to be done outside of the armbian build env then

[Discord] <Werner> Not necessarily. If you need something pre-installed that needs compiling, use the user customization script that allows you to work inside the generated image before filling final assembly. Simply install necessary tools via apt or wget them, use overlay folder to place your source code or wget that as well. Just put the commands (like cd /source/code; ./configure; make; make in <clipped message>
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> stall;...) in order as needed. Work is done inside the image.

[Discord] <Werner> I use this method to generate images for rpi4 with pigpiod from source pre installed.
<mort>
and Werner: I tried to do that in customize-image.sh but 'apt-get install' doesn't seem to work there, it doesn't know of any packages. Maybe an apt-get update is necessary first tho
<mort>
I'll try
<mort>
ah it's add_packages_to_rootfsin lib.config now

[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Not really looking forward to using armbian on it, but switching from factory to openwrt and simply had a thought... Yet my curiosiry wonders about that
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Possible sure. But would need major development. Introduce new architecture which would be mips. And then add support for mt7620 soc

it's best to think in terms of "if there isn't an image already, armbian can't be installed without many hours of toil and suffering"
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Good measure. After I've revised the specs of the device, I realized that armbian would not fit into the 8MB of flash. I even have problems doing some stuff over ssh where I need to download stuff, it definitely has to download to ram, which is larger in size (64MB)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Routers are a fascinating combination of low specs and huge functionality
